More Mets Headlines ADVERTISEMENT print this page | e-mail this page The New York Mets today recalled outfielder Carlos Gomez from New Orleans (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League and optioned righthanded pitcher Mike Pelfrey to the Zephyrs. Gomez will wear #27 and will be available for today's game vs. Milwaukee. Gomez, 21, was hitting .286 (40-140) with 24 runs scored, eight doubles, two triples, two home runs, 13 RBI, 17 stolen bases with 15 walks and 23 strikeouts in 36 games this year with New Orleans. Gomez is leading the PCL in stolen bases. Carlos batted .222 (2-9) with one run scored and two RBI in 10 spring training games for the Mets. He was the co-winner of the Sterling Award, emblematic of the Most Valuable Player at Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League in 2006. Gomez finished second in the EL with 41 stolen bases and fifth with eight triples. Carlos also batted .281 (121-430) with 53 runs scored, 24 doubles, seven home runs and 48 RBI with Binghamton. The 6-4, 195-pounder was signed by New York as a non-drafted free agent on July 27, 2002. Mike Pelfrey was 0-5 with a 6.53 ERA in six starts for New York. Thursday's starter against the Cubs is to be determined.
My guess is that in the next few days, Alou will go to the DL, Sele takes Pelfrey's spot in the rotation, and Burgos comes up from AAA. I'd hope they'd use Gomez to start in this case, rather than waste him away on the bench... but I do love me some Endy Chavez.
I forgot about Alou's injury. Gomez call-up makes a lot more sense to me now. The old Mets would've recalled Ledee.
didnt chan ho park have a very strong spring outing, only to melt in just 1 MLB Met appearance? Think he's worth another shot??
I saw Sele over in spring training in a split squad game, he was god awful... The other pitcher was chan ho park... he was just as bad
You can't put a lot of stock into Spring Training split-squad games. Fact is, Sele's league average for his career, had a league average season for LA last season, and hell, what else do you really need from a one or two start plug in?
It was Fernando. We signed Gomez in 2002, so he was probably about 16 at the time. Latin scouting = awesome.
Gomez with a good not great debut but Easley is making me think that Valentin might be a backup when he comes off the DL. Since becoming the starter he has been on a tear. Seems like another good find by this organization. I'd bet AZ wishes they still had him.
Gomez didn't have a great debut? He went 2-for-4, stole a base, scored twice, one of his hits was an extra base hit, and he started the scoring run in the bottom of the 8th with his 2-out single. He also made a great diving catch. What more could you possibly want from him?
