Carl Pavano tried to throw a bullpen session Wednesday but stopped after a few minutes because of his strained elbow. "It's getting ridiculous," said Pavano, who missed nearly two years with other injuries before making two starts this season. "The team needs me, especially with other guys going down. Rest hasn't helped it. We came up with a plan we thought would work, but we've come up short." Tommy John surgery is a strong possibility for Pavano, who plans to see Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. "We're discouraged," Cashman said. "We hope [there's no surgery], but we can't rule it out." If he has the ligament transplant, Pavano would be out through most of next season, the last year of his $39.95 million contract. Coming off nearly four years of not pitching, a 2009 comeback would be a long shot, so the righthander from Southington is considering the option of surgery carefully. http://www.courant.com/sports/baseb...60328.story?page=2&coll=hc-headlines-baseball
Ya know, instead of calling him the female genitalia countless times...I'm just gonna stop, he has caused so many headaches and he's a frail piece of garbage! GO AWAY
What a cock. How come, it seems like for every young, exciting prospect we have on the team (Cano/Hughes) there's an oft-injured bag of douche (Kevin Brown/Carla Pavano).
It's the obsession with the "win now" mentality. We are so consumed by the thought that we must win the World Series every year that we are willing to spend truckloads of cash on anyone available. Unfortunately, this has been the result. Fortunately, Cashman seems to have tugged back on the reigns lately. We'll see. Pavano needs to go now. Just dump him, and hope some team picks him up. At least that way, we get the chance to dump the salary.
While that seems like the thing to do I don't think anybody is going to pick up a guy that is the Ameriacn League version of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior with half the stuff.
No team would trade for him on the verge of TJ surgery. Especially since he would be a FA when he came back. To drop him would be a complete waste of time and $$$ since he is guaranteed that money. Might as well see him through the doctor visit and just maybe they might get a few innings out of him.
Yeah, obviously there aren't going to be many bites if we throw him back in the water, but it's worth a shot. He's just a money pit right now. It only makes it more miserable that Cashman had the opportunity to unload him and actually get back value in the postseason, but in a manner very reminiscent of the Chargers GM in the Rivers situation, he refused to admit he could be wrong, and held onto his guy. Too bad for the Yankees, it didn't work out as well as Rivers did. (Though one could still argue they'd have been a much better team with Brees, but this is the baseball board.)
I'm not suggesting we trade him at all. We blew that opportunity already. I'm solely talking dropping him to waivers. It works out for us like this: if no one picks him up, he's still here, not that it matters. If someone does pick him up, we stop paying him. It's akin to the Manny situation a few years ago, except this time, there's not a level of trust in the player to justify the waiver pull.
I understand but why would any team, including the Royals and D-rays pick him up from the waiver wire. They would be responsible for his salary and his injuries. No team will touch Pavano from this day forward until he can prove he can pitch on a consistant basis.
