This doesn't really feel like a 'stunner' like the NFL world is making it seem. He hasn't played a game this year while New England is 1-3 and they've already replaced him with JC Jackson as the top corner. He'll be a good add for a good team, but he's also 31 and likely will be out of the league in the coming couple years unless he can switch to safety.
Schefty said they saved almost $6 million by making this move (I heard it on the radio in passing, but I'm pretty sure the number is $6 million). Wouldn't shock me if he ends up with KC or Tampa
I don't know if it's true but somebody wrote a story that Gilmore was complaining about his salary this year with $7M seen by him as too low for a player of his (not playing) caliber. The catch? The Pats advanced him $5M of this years salary in 2020. This is the kind of player I never want on a Jets team ever. When money is what a player is focused on then winning becomes an afterthought.
Belichick made his reputation on always getting rid of players a year too soon rather than a year too late, but he also always had Brady there to take a lower salary and make up for drops in talent with performance on the field. It will be interesting to see if that strategy works when you don't have a quarterback who can make up for dumping players who can still play.
they are giving up on the season. the timing kinda indicates that. They had all offseason to find their way out of Gilmore's predicament. They put him on the PUP to kick the can down the road and see how the season is going first. Now they are 1-3 and the rookie QB doesn't throw it more than 5 yards down the field, they know they dont need Gilmore for any playoff run
