Adam Schefter on X: "It’s a new era in New England: the Patriots have hired Jerod Mayo as their next head coach and he will be formally introduced at a press conference next week, a source tells ESPN. https://t.co/SeHKoAonrP" / X (twitter.com)
Good. Not having to face Vrabel 2x a year is a win. They hired a HC before the GM. Is Mayo running the entire ship?
It seems odd that the Pats would hire a HC before a GM. Isn't that the sort of arranged marriage that can lead to trouble? It definitely disrupts the chain of command of HC to GM to owner.
I noticed this as well. I think it means two things. 1) they are just going to promote someone to GM from within or 2) Mayo will run the entire thing I also can't really imagine who he will hire as his OC. McD seems like an obvious one, but surely McD will follow Bill wherever he goes. Mayo has only been in NE his entire career. How many ties to OCs does he actually have? Wes Welker is an interesting name I saw earlier.
The Bills hired McDermott first and then Sean convinced the Pegula's to hire Beane as the GM. I would say it has worked out pretty well for the Bills.
Per NFL Sirius XM this morning, the Pats had a "Head Coach Ascension" clause added to Mayo's contract last year. They didn't have to go through Rooney rule stuff or anything else-- when Bill left, Mayo was automatically the guy.
Never even been a coordinator. Coaching only 5 years. This could end up working out really well for the Pats, but it could equally be a disaster. Doesn’t have enough experience to gauge whether this the right call.
That's the part I stopped at too. Plus I think I saw the word "married" out of the corner of my eye and my brain went numb.
I don't envy him. He's got almost impossible shoes to fill. Not like Jets HCs where the bar is very low. Ordinarily I'd wish him success but no, because if he does have success, it will be at the expense of the Jets.
Shocked that it isn't Vrabel. I knew that Kraft's ego about "The Patriot Way" would be driving this hire, but that's why I thought it would be Vrabel, who also actually had a resume as well. And there's the point that the Patriots' biggest problems were at GM and on offense, and this hire does absolutely nothing for either of them. If it wasn't for the memory of the Tom Brady-led Patriots, and the aura of perfection that surrounds it, I think there would be a lot more criticism of this choice by the talking heads.
Funny, Vrabel pulled a Belichick against the Cheats a few years ago, he did something a little questionable - but legal - and the Titans won in an upset . Guess where he learned it? The hilarious part was Belichick was practically stroking out, screaming at the ref, "He can't do that!" What a hump. Belichick has pull there. I would not be surprised if this was the petty reason why Vrabel did not get the job. F 'em both, anyway.
seems a really weird choice - still it won't matter who the HC is without a quality QB and that's the real challenge
