The Panthers will allow Pro Bowl defensive end Julius Peppers to become a free agent next month, according to multiple reports.

The Charlotte Observer reports general manager Marty Hurney is scheduled to speak with reporters on Tuesday. He's expected to announce that the team won't designate Peppers as its franchise player for a second consecutive season. Teams have until Thursday to designate franchise and transition players.

Charlotte television station WCNC cites an unnamed team source as saying the Panthers will not keep Peppers.

If the Panthers wanted to franchise Peppers this year, they would have to pay him more than $20 million. Peppers made more than $18 million last season under the franchise designation.

The Patriots and Eagles have been mentioned as possible suitors for Peppers. New England tried to trade for him last season, only to see Peppers accept the franchise tag. There are concerns, however, that the Pats can't afford Peppers, especially if they sign nose tackle Vince Wilfork and quarterback Tom Brady to long-term contracts.

We can't pick him up since we finished in the top 4 right? Or did that only apply to RFAs? Not that I necessarily want Peppers anyway for that kind of price tag.

I think we would have to lose someone with a comparable contract, but if Woody can work the system should we try to get him?

The restrictions only apply to UFA.

They couldn't sign Peppers even if they wanted to. There's a thread explaining the uncapped free agency rules stickied at the top of the Jets forum if you want to understand why.

20 million? He is not Demarcus Ware. And trying to convert him to OLB at this stage in his career for that money is a risky move that could backfire.

Just not worth the price he will command based on prior performance (effort-wise. When he's a beast, he's one of the best in the league, but he just disappears too often).

Peppers WILL not interest me in any way. He can play for the Calgary Stampeders for all I give a fuck. Thunder, you've been a member here for 6 years....you should know better.

screw Peppers.....the guy is complacent, doesn't have experience in a 3-4 scheme....and waaaay overpriced.

I'm not sure i'd want him....even if we could get him.

I want him for the Falcons (my favorite NFC team), not the Jets. I think his ego would be out of control in the largest market. Plus, 4-3 DE.

I don't think there are going to be too many 3-4 teams looking to bring in Julius Peppers. At his age, he would do best to stick with 4-3 systems.

Also, while it is a different team, I agree with the logic in this analysis:

Well for what its worth...probably not much. I was listening to Carton on the morning drive and he said there was a report that one of the NY football teams was getting ready to make Peppers a 7 yr deal around 100M offer when free agency starts. And since the Giants already have one 100M guy I cant see them getting another. He said he was going to talk more about it at 8am. I'm in the office now without my headphones so I cant listen.

He mentioned the fact that we would have to lose a FA to aquire Peppers. He also noted that if we lose a FA and sign a FA his salary would have to be equal to the guy we lost. However we could make up that lost $$ in the form of a bonus. Not sure how true this is. For example lose Feely...get Peppers and only pay him a 1M salary next year but make his bonus like 6-7M. I dont know all th ins and outs of this new FA shit but its a thought.
