This may have been posted somewhere, but everytime I view this, it causes me pain. I hope we have put these years behind us and, in general, contnue to make solid picks. Jets draft busts, ouch
i love how were associated with these fuck ups still. over a decade ago. a video like this could be made for almost every team. the only notable ones are rice(who alot of people passed on), marino (whom other teams did), and sapp (no excuse for that one) i think the year they showed this the year we drafted vilma. as a central part of the draft broadcast. regardless its old. sincer then our drafting has been solid, not stellar. regardless those days are over.
He went third overall behind George Rogers and LT. Rogers had won the Heisman and the Saints took him #1 overall, Giants of course got LT at #2. I'd say the Saints fucked up a lot worse than we did. But to answer your question, everyone but those two guys were still on the board when we took Freeman.
Not many on this board back then. I remember posting here the day they drafted him, but there were only a few posters back then. It was me, Al Gore, some guy named Gates that was helping us with some of the technical stuff, Petro of course, and Champ69 who I remember was whining that we were 0 for Walt Michaels.... Ohhhhh, you meant the draft board.......disregard.
Yeah, champs's sig was in black & white back then but still huge and negative, of course. I think he's the one who put this video together, actually.
The only reason they singled the Jets out of making this video is because no other team besides the Giants has the crowd reactions after the picks.
It's the Jets fans in attendance which cause this video to exist. Plenty of other teams were just as bad.
I guess the better question is what noteable player was available that we missed? I do not see Freeman as a bad pick
The only good guys I remember after Freeman were Ronnie Lott and Hugh Green, a DE from Pitt that went to Tampa Bay. But I'm not a draftnik, I'm sure there were others. Given Freeman played 12 seasons and set a lot of team rushing records, I'd say it was a good pick. If I were the Saints and passed up LT, then I'd say we blew it. But at the time nobody knew how good LT would even be. You can't predict that. There was a lot of speculation at the time that the Giants would take Freeman and we'd get LT, both teams needed both positions, each coming off 4-12.
Let's take a peak: MIAMI: 2006: Jason Allen----started 0 games. Injured most of year. 2005: Ronnie Brown---Hard to screw up that pick 2004: Vernon Carey---Solid pick 2003: No pick 2002: No Pick 2001: Jamar Fletcher---sucks 2000: No Pick 1999: No Pick 1998: John Avery:rofl: 1997: Yatil Green:rofl: 1996: Daryl Gardener 1995: Billy Milner I count 2 picks in 12 years that panned out. That is funny.
HOF'rs # Mike Singletary, Linebacker, Chicago Bears - 2nd round (38th overall). Inducted in 1998. # Howie Long, Defensive End, Oakland Raiders - 2nd round (48th overall). Inducted in 2000. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1981_NFL_Draft
How often does this have to be posted? We get it, we all know we used to be an embarrassment. This is at least the 5th time that clip has been posted on here.
