We've naturally been intrigued with all the talk about our QB?s and who will emerge as the starter (I?ll go out on a limb and say Ramsey wins out a real close competition with Chad) but what?s concerning me most now is, who are we throwing to? Personally, I think Coles may have lost a step or two (still a good receiver) and could be on the downside. McCareins has been inconsistent, and I really wanted to see him develop more last year (I?ll give him a slight pass, because the whole offense was discombobulated all season) and I wonder now if he really has the ability to step up and be a go to guy, Cotchery is still an unknown, and with no Crebet, its not too promising.
I think coles will be back to form this year. I hope JMac lives up to his previous hype. But I see Tim being the #2....scary, huh.
Hoy, are we ever going to have a bonafide DEEP THREAT in my lifetime?! I want to see a tall, fast, strong sprinter who can strong arm a defender, haul in a ball like an acrobat and push someone's face in all at the same time. Just to have it. You know, like my very own customized, personal WR Collection. Yep. Anyway, it is what it is. I love Coles but he needs a steady compliment. McCareins, I don't know, I think the guy was more mentally broken than physically challenged on some score. Gimme more Cotchery, too. Yesterday. TC will expose the new blood, one would hope.
Yeah, I would have to agree with that. Say what you will, but he could take a hit and was good for a block here and there in his time. Like the PO game vs. Jax in '98, I think that was one of the best, complete overall games of his career. That Big Mouth. Well, I had to throw that in. Hehehe.
I think Coles will go back to his old form this year. Possibly even a 1,000 yard season if our O-Line is consistant. I would give J-Mac a pass as well for last year, but he still did drop easy passes that were thrown right to him. Cotchery in the slot might benefit. Hopefully he can turn into something. Where Dwight stands at this point is beyond me at the moment. I'll wait for training camp and preseason to start before I go judging his placement.
J-Mac is wearing my patience thin to be honest. It's one thing to not put up numbers b/c of the horrible situation we were in last year, but don't drop the easy passes that go right to you. A Good WR should have the concentration to make plays he just doesn't make. This year could also potentially be filled with a number of different qb's so he better get his mind right before the start of this season or wr will be the no.1 priority for the draft next year, and Jmac will be looking for a new team.
Short quick receivers have surpassed the tall ones. Santana Moss and Steve Smith are both 5' 9" tall and were ranked first and second in the league last year. The Ty Law rule prevents DB's from interfering as much with their routes as they did in the past and they get open now where in the past they would have been knocked off earlier in their routes by stronger DB's while the taller, stronger WR's could hold their own vs DB's. Only three out of the top ten receivers in the NFL last year were over 6' 1" tall (Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Plaxico Burress). http://www.nfl.com/stats/leaders/NFL/RECYDS/2005/regular
WOW!!! I dont really see anything negative in your post. This is a 1st for me. I had to read it twice to make sure.
good point (thought i'd never say that to you)...but being tall does not hurt the wr's, how can it?? in fact it actually helps....it's just a coincidence though that the most talented quick and fast wr's in the league are currently shorter....
Our WR corp sucks, bottom line, Coles is overrated, JMC is just awful, Cotchery could turn into something good and Dwight is old. I see the WR as the weakest position on the Jets depth chart.
I don't believe coles is overrated. He is what 2 years removed from a 1200 yard season and accounted for over half of ramsey's passing yards. I mean since he left the jets with pennington being healthy, he's never really had a qb to throw to him. If he gets an aggressive offense that will use his speed, he can easily become a deep threat. It's like santana moss. We never was aggresive enoguh or had a qb to throw deep enough to use his talents. But then he went to washington who knew how to use his speeds and that's why he's succesful. WIth wideouts, i believe their success isn't solely on their own talents, but the players around them, and the whether or not the system they're in can actually utilize their talents.
Yeah, that's all well and good, but give me Harold Carmichael with muscles in a 3 receiver set with 2 other midgets just for laughs and I won't mind.
Dante Ridgway could surprise if given the chance. Hey, he demonstrated about as much as JMac did last year.
Yes, Santana went back to old form - after he left. Well, there was no-one to throw the ball to him, blah blah. Plus, let me run East/West, hell even South, then I might consider running NORTH. He wasn't the same player for us after he was injured, period. He played scared, which is why having a BIG TOUGH TALL B*STARD NEVER HURTS GENERALLY SPEAKING. Gimme a big guy and then some wily smaller guys to offset the damage, not an army of smurfs to forge the way. Mixing it up, what a novel idea; especially if you have the raw material to do that instead of six degrees of an Oompa Loompa. I need some coffee.
The timing wasn't right and other needs were too pressing to address the WR position this year. Besides, paying big bucks for a talented WR with our QB position still way too much in the air is putting the cart before the horse. For those reasons, the WR position was put on the back burner and rightfully so. But next year (hopefully Clemens' year) it's a whole other ball game. I haven't followed a Dwayne Jarrett, for example, but I expect us to be looking for a Clemens go-to guy in next year's draft.
Yes, of course. Still, is it too much to ask to want a monster gazelle just to float my boat if in principle only? I'll take Big Mean Fast Wide Receivers for a hundred, Alex. Sigh.
