* disclaimer - I'm only referring to our RB's, not Brad Smith on an end around. I'm not sure what to attribute that to, but it seems like an odd stat to me, especially when we're seeing so much safety in the box. Last season we had a number of long runs that resulted in TD's. I know our RB's have the ability to rip off the long run if they can get out into the open but they just aren't doing it. Are we failing at getting to the second level with our linemen? Are the WR's not blocking down field? What gives? In the close games we've lost without scoring a TD all it would have taken is for one long run. We're not getting them.
You mean just RB's right, Brad Smith had a 53 yard run. YOU just added that disclaimer**** lol I know LT's explosiveness was brought up yesterday and it was a toss up of blaming him or blaming the oline. Greene never gets a real shot until it's too late and whether it's the oline or not LT does not look like early season LT.
our OL was pushing back run blitzes last year and getting our guys 1 on 1s on the second level or on the edge. this year its simply not happening. that and running in between the guards over half of the time is pretty predictable.
It's amazing how much of a difference you can see in the o-line play this year. They're consistently getting stood up or pushed back at the LOS rather than the 2-3 yard push we saw a lot of last year. I don't really see any fix for that in sight either. Maybe it's time to work McKnight in some more to try and get more speed out there. I'm not trying to sell him as some sort of savior, but something obviously needs to change.
Shockingly I would not be opposed to this, something has to change. Who knows maybe he can provide some spark or something.
Woody and Mangold are hurt. Slauson is in his first year starting. Brick and Brandon have played well but our O line depth the last few games havent been playing well either. Dont get me started on Ben Hartsock.
i was actually thinking this yesterday. mcknight catching out of the backfield. tosses and stretches for him. people would generally say the coaches know when hes ready but ull never find out until u give the kid more touches at this point. then again the problem appears to be the blocking, its not like LT and Greene appear slow or beat up. but the speed to the edges is one of the only fixes I can think of if your not getting a push off the snap. I also notice our backs going to the middle of the field for short passes. a few times on key plays if we sent a back to the flats we couldve made some plays. this is just lately i cant say the same for earlier in the season.
our o line, like our defense....... hasn't performed anywhere as well as they have last year. the o line played very well in the beginning of the year and opened some giant holes, but the run blocking has been horrible the last few games. the pass protection has been pretty good overall , at least prior to woody getting hurt.
It could potentially soften the hammer we're running into in the A->B gaps. Of course that would require him to be taking some of those carries too.
This whole thread makes me realize that this team has a lot of holes....more than just a pass rushing OLB and a Safety.
Faneca was an excellent run blocker last year. I understand why they made the decision they did, but that's the truth.. Faneca was far better run blocking than Slauson is. Throw in injuries to Mangold and Woody and it's not hard to see why they aren't having the success they did. And that's not to mention the completely telegraphed and predictable offense that the defense knows is coming.
Certainly the 2 places I go first are Mangold's injury and Alan Faneca missing from the run blocking. Without looking at the numbers, I also feel like we don't even have very many 6-7 yard runs over the last 5-7 weeks. Early in the year, it seemed like LT especially would get 5,6,7 yards every time he touched it. Lately , we've been seeing a ton of -1 to 2 yard runs.
Maybe they should spread the opposing defense out.don't let them bring 8 down.if we line up 4 wide with Keller and jco in the inside and b.e. and tone on the outside.give mark a run pass option at the line it would give the defense more to think about. Just a thought
Bad blocking and lack of an explosive RB. Jets have never had an explosive RB for as long as i can remember. Leon was the closest we ever got and he wasn't an every down back.
LT can still break ankles still......we NEVER run any misdirection runs with him hes NOT shonn greene
