Just trying to focus on the positive here since it seems all we hear in the media and this board is how we are in this great tailspin, all our players hate each other, our coach is a buffoon, and our qb is the worst in the league. Lets not forget what that coach of ours has done for the NY Jet defense. Whens the last time as jet fans we can complain about having a 5th ranked defense?? Unfortunately all Rex's talk has overshadowed that (he needs to work on this and hopefully he will see that with some heavy inflection after this disappointing season) and instead of saying rex has brought the jets an identity of a tough defensive football team they say Rex has brought the jets an identity of a loud mouth trash talking team. Rex took over a defense that had similar personnel to the team in 2008 that finished 16th. He brought in Leonard and Scott and changed that culture immediately. Top 5 all three years. Now I know what some of you are thinking. Our defense can't cover a tight end, we get beat to the edges by the explosive backs, and we can't rush the passer. All true but let's look at the big picture. This defense is still one or two players away from being dominant. I have read too many times about how we have holes so many holes to fill including on defense. Is that true?..somewhat. We certainly need more athleticism and passrushing ability from the linebacker spot, we need more athleticism, speed, and strength from the safety position, but we don't need it all at once. Pace and Scott are still under contract. These guys are still starters in this league so we have time to groom replacements over the next two seasons. We get a safety, maybe two, in here that can play and pass rush or no pass rush we will be top 2 or 3 in the league again. We get a pass rusher and a safety and we might not need an offense. We have the patriots in the division and Rex and tanny are always tailoring the defense to stop the best offenses. They will look this over and get the personnel in here to stop those tight ends. That means safeties and linebackers will be a key focus this offseason. We get some new blood in here at those positions, bring back pouha, and couple that with another year under the belt for Wilkerson, wilson, and Ellis and I am exited to see what this defense can be next year. There are 26 other teams in the league that would love the major problem for their defense to be that they can't cover a tight end so let's keep things in perspective here. The Jets aren't in rebuilding mode they have a defense that as long as Rex is here will win us a lot of games and keep us in the race. Now all we have to do it's get some offense behind them.
we need a legit pass rusher up front, speed in the safety/free safety spots, and more speed at LB...the Pats will kill us with tight ends and most teams know they can avoid Revis/Cro and just attack the middle and when we all out blitz Wilson was exposed the last couple of weeks in the slot.
Wilson had a productive season. His coverage has been pretty tight. He needs to improve his tackling. He's not wrapping up and sticking players well enough.
That is his issue IDK if it is by play design but he plays far off his man to often and thats why it looks as he is exposed... needs to bump and cover more I'd rather sure up pass rusher it would make our safeties look less of a issue IMO I can't wait to have OTA's and see where this Defense is after a offseason ( no lockout )
