It's Heavy.com, but there's a direct quote from Orlando Brown:

“The best situation in the world right now for me is Cincinnati,” Brown told the Cincinnati Bengals Talk podcast during an exclusive interview on August 23, revealing: “There [were] a few other teams involved — especially the New York Jets, was the other option as well. They were kinda going through things with Aaron Rodgers trying to figure all of that out, and honestly they had a better price, but ultimately man, this was the best situation for me.”

So for those trashing JD for not doing enough to address the OT position this off season, he tried. He offered more money than the Bengals, but Brown thought the Bengals was the best situation for him.

Let's not make this all about money. I saw Brown's comments a few hours ago and while they were interesting they only took one guy out of the equation. That has almost nothing to do with Douglas doing enough to fill a significant hole in the roster that still exists today.

The performance of the offensive line is in direct relationship to the performance of the QB. If the QB is ineffective, weaknesses in the offensive line will be magnified. However, if the QB is a high functioning player, such as a Manning, Favre, Brady etc, most people won't even know who is up front. Now the Jets have such a high functioning QB in Rodgers and I expect the offensive line will perform at a high level.

Orlando Brown does like to talk, so keep that in mind when looking at his quotes.

Even still, we should’ve been in the game for him. The Jets stupidly backed themselves into a corner by signing a 2-year deal with Duane Brown including a $7 million dead cap if he was cut this year because they were desperate.

If they didn’t do that, Orlando Brown’s $16 million APR would’ve been easy to stomach.

Great job Joe Douglas for trying and failing to land a decent tackle!

One can only "fail" if one makes a crucial mistake or screws up somehow, that caused the player to change his mind and go elsewhere. When a play has decided that another situation is the best for him, all a GM can do is state his case and try to outbid the other team, and that's what JD did. That imo is not a "failure." That's an excessively negative take on the situation, but then that's in keeping with your overall agenda.

If I read the article correctly, the Jets offered him MORE money than Cincinnati. I don't see Brown's contract hindering the Jets at all.

NC, no offense intended but, IMHO, you could/should have end the feedback by omitting the last sentence... I get it but, ya know somethings it just better to make the statement and walk away.

SOJAZ, no offense taken, and you're probably right, I should have just left it at that. Normally, I don't even read or respond to his posts any more. I have him on ignore, but I happened to look at this one. I just get tired of all the negativity.

Thanks. JD is always two steps in front of us. Some folks think that if you snap your fingers and throw enough money you can always get anything you want. They say, we could have had so and so or so and so. That is not the way for everyone. There is far more to an individual looking for change than just money.

Kudos to JD for going after Brown and making him the best offer, it's not that easy to secure top tackle like that, we can agree on that. But can we also agree that there were opportunities to get someone better than Billy Turner?

There may have been, I don't know who the FA OTs were that were available, if they fit our scheme, and how much they wanted. Turner had a ton of experience in this scheme and with both Hackett and Rodgers. I don't know how he played last year, but he was Rodgers' RT in 2021 when Rodgers made MVP. He made perfect sense. I'm not going to panic.

Any above avg FA Tackle was most likely deciding between 32 legit offers.....

Trying doesn't count In this sport. You either do, or you don't.

Just because ONE player goes to another team, doesn't mean you figured out the problem. You continue to figure It out, until you figure It out. This doesn't excuse anything.

I’m confused here… Orlando Brown said we offered more money so how does Duane Brown’s contract matter at all? Money wasn’t an issue. Orlando Brown chose a team one year removed from the Super Bowl over a team that didn’t know if their QB was going to be a guy one year removed from an MVP trophy or a guy one year away from being out of the league.

I disagree. Some teams were tight against the cap, others perhaps already had good starting OTs, for a rebuilding team, it wouldn't make much sense to spend a ton of cash on one player, when they needed to replace quite a few players.

Did I say that JD has quit trying to figure it out? There could have been other FA OTs that he contacted as well, or perhaps none of the others were anywhere near as good as Duane Brown, much less Orlando Brown. It would have been reckless and could have caused problems fitting Rodgers' contract in under the cap if JD had gone out throwing a lot of cash around in FA. The Jets believe in Brown, Mitchell, and Warren. I'm sure that JD still believed in Becton, although Saleh has said that he didn't trust Becton. Turner knows the scheme and has experience with the scheme, Hackett and Rodgers, and was Rodgers' starting RT just 2 seasons ago when he last won the MVP. I'm sure that they thought that group would get the job done. I'm also certain that JD has been working the phones and keeping an eye on the waiver wire.

They way I read it, he would have signed if we already secured AR, he specifically mentioned we were "going through things with AR". I don't think he picked Burrow over AR, he picked certainty with Burrow over uncertainty with the Jets not having AR yet, at least that's what it sounds like.
