Obviously, a lot of Jet fans are disappointed that the 2006 draft didn't produce any "playmakers". But what everyone needs to remember is that we are in full on rebuilding mode. The Jets are at least a 2 year project to return to competitiveness. We need some building blocks to be the foundation of this team for years to come. The playmakers will come next year. Perhaps through the draft or Free Agency. Maybe we'll catch lightning in a bottle with one of the "nobodies" we picked up in the later rounds. For everything this draft lacked in entertainment value, it's hard to second guess any of the first 3-4 picks. I've already written off the 2006 season but I am very excited to think about where this team will be a year or 2 from now.
It's not like we really have a choice. I mean, we won a SB in 68-69 so we can't get too greedy! JETS fans don't understand patience because the word has turned to Patients Now there's a Bumpersticker!!
Most of the knowledgable posters on this board agree. We go nowhere in 2006. If you know this and accept this, as do we, then our draft strategy and picks this year make a lot of sense. Right now I think I'm okay with this draft. I have to sort out the second day yet... it's only Sunday night and my head is still spinning (and that's got nothing to do with the couple of beers, mind you), but I think we may have done okay. I'm real happy with Ferguson and Mangold. My only complaint would be, I sure wish we could have moved up and taken Cutler. We probably tried to do that, but Denver was so hot to trot on him it was fruitless to get into a bidding war with them. We'll see how these others play out, especially in Day Two, but for us to be looking for expensive "playmakers" this year is foolish, amateurish talk. "Playmakers" to accomplish what? Waste bundled draft picks to move up for them and then have them sputter for lack of talent surrounding them? "Playmakers" in which to invest heavy contracts and future Cap woes, only to strap us when we need to step up to surrounding talent? No, we made some good moves on Day One and we're on the right track. This coaching staff and FO wants to build a solid franchise and that's not going to happen without building a solid base.
I had a bumpersticker years ago that said, "I'm a JETS fan - what's your excuse?" After waiting all these years, I'm willing to be patient for the right reasons. Instant gratification does nothing for me. Most times. Hehehe.
