The draft is one of my favorite things of the year, it's almost as good as Christmas to me. Over the past week or so, I have been very torn between a few things we could/should do with our draft. I know Jones is not the 25 year old he used to be and I'm all for drafting Knowshon with #17. However, I know our QB situation is a pretty big deal. I'm not banking on Kellen or anyone else for that matter to lead us to a winning record. I'd even be happy with 8-8 this season. Could we move up and try and snag Sanchez, thinking he's the Franchise QB we have been needing forever? Might we strike gold with a guy like Percy Harvin or Kenny Britt? Could we make a serious move and maybe get a guy like Sean Smith in round 2? The reason I'm posting this is I am interested in what YOU want to do. I'm curious on each member's thought on what you would do. Pretend you are Woody for the draft. Make your moves and picks.
I VERY EXCITE FOR THE NFL DRAFT Seriously tho, I want to see us upgrade the offense. The defense looks pretty good already, yea we need depth but our offense is a couple pieces away from being really good. Particularly, I want a stud WR. I really think Britt is gonna be a beast in the NFL (no I'm not just saying that cus I'm a Rutgers student/fan), he's a big guy but he's not just tall he's well built. His hands are better than he's given credit for and he's got pretty good speed (both game and timed, he ran a 4.40 40 at his pro day) I'd like to see us add Shonn Greene or Donald Brown but if they're not available or a good defensive player is available in the fourth I'd like to see us take Javon Ringer. At any rate, we need to add a running back, two RBs isn't gonna get it done. And of course we need a blocking TE but those guys can be had in the mid-late rounds
I'd personally like us to look long and hard at upgrading the RB position at 17. Jones is 31, he's holding out, and RB is a position that should by all accounts fall well value-wise for us. I think Knowshon's poor 40 helps his chances of being there and Wells impressing at his proday helps the case for Knowshon being there as well, since Wells could be the first RB off the board. I'm okay with a Wells pick if Moreno's gone, but I really think Knowshon's going to be a player in this league and his all-around game would do wonders in Schotty's offense. He's really a complete back and is a lifelong Jets fan, I would adore the pick. However, if Maclin or Sanchez falls, I think you need to look long and hard at them. Sanchez is my pick if he's there, I personally think he's just got everything you're looking for except experience. Maclin, on the other hand, is just so talented and can break away for the score every time he touches the ball. I really like Clowney, but you really have to consider Maclin if he's there. For the record I am against choosing Josh Freeman because I don't like his decision making on the field. He's got the build and the talent, but he just makes the wrong decision too often for me to believe that he will succeed. He reminds me a lot coming out of Jamarcus Russell, but with a bit less physical talent and a better head, and that scares me. If Sanchez, Maclin, and Moreno are gone, I'd favor a trade down into the mid-late 20's. Back there, you can grab a Kenny Britt, Hakeem Nicks, Donald Brown, Sean Smith, or Jarron Gilbert and maximize their value with the position where you're picking them.
I'm on board with Moreno as well. Some of our defensive and offensive linemen are getting up there in age. By the time Sanchez or Freeman is ready to play at a reasonable level, guys like Faneca, Woody, Jenkins, Ellis & Coleman will all be fading. We're close enough right now that if we can bolster the RB, WR, TE, & DE spots in this draft, I think we can compete with Kellen at QB. Plus, drafting Moreno makes TJ holdout less important and gives the Jets leverage in Leon's contract negotiations.
You bring up a good point; I'd really like to build some line depth in the later rounds. I'd personally be very happy with someone who could step up at NT when Jenkins is tired, like Chris Baker or Ron Brace, as well as looking to draft a tackle and/or a guard.
I read recently that Rex said that he learned one thing from Ozzy Newsome in Baltimore and that was to draft the Best Player Available no matter what the position. I have no problems with that but, I'd love to see us get a RB in round 1 and a WR in round 2.
We have six picks. I want to see: QB (only if Sanchez) WR (first two picks) RB (second, third, or fourth) TE (6th or 7th) DE (first, second, or late) NT (late) S (late) OL depth (late)
Hopefully at some point our board allows us to trade down. Even getting an extra 6th or 7th might allow to take a big leg at punter. I know some people are against drafting a punter, but we need something better than what we have. I hope we look to trade down as much as possible.
If we decide to stay pat at 17 and not trade up for Sanchez, or trade down for Freeman. i really think Brandon Pettigrew is gunna be our choice he adds another weapon on offense and is a great blocker. not to mention he is great value at 17. I know TE two years in a row is a hard pill to swallow but him and Keller are two different player who compliment each other amazingly. not to mention Pettigrew can help tremendously with our new power running game. I'm hoping he is there when we pick.
I'd much rather take Richard Quinn in the 4th. Pettigrew+Keller would give our offense a lot of different looks, but Quinn is almost as good a blocker as Pettigrew and we have bigger needs than a TE in the 1st. I'd rather take a S, CB, DE, RB or WR with the 1st.
I'd rather take a S, CB, DE, RB or WR with the 1st.[/QUOTE] Why would we take another safety when we just picked up Leonhard and signed Elam and have Kerry Rhodes. At CB we just picked up a probowl potential cb in Lito Shepard to go along with our All pro CB in Revis and rather than what most people think it is not a one year deal as Lito's 10mil dollar bonus will be spread out over the length of his contract. Not to mention we also have Lowery going into his second year who will do nothing but improve especially when he is playing the nickle and not the outside. I would only go DE in the first if Jackson is avaliable which i doubt he will be. RB i think we should go in the second as there are many quality RBs avaliable. WR is definately an option but i feel that WR is more of a luxury pick and should only be had if our QB situation is set. Pettigrew kills two birds with one stone. Keller and Pettigrew's receiving ability will force the LB to stay honest and respect them even before the snap so cheating on the run game will be more of a guessing game for the defense. Not to mention his blocking will improve the run tremendously. and his posseion receiving will add to our ball control offense. I would just love the idea of him and keller lining up for the next ten years and be a threat down both seams and underneath.
I'm operating under the assumption that Maclin is gone at 17. I begin fielding calls for a trade. If I can get decent value, I try to trade back anywhere from 20 to 28. I then take Kenny Britt at the end of the first, Jarron Gilbert with my second, and Shonn Greene with the extra 2nd I pick up. In the 3rd, I go with best defender available and look for Richard Quinn in the 4th. I stock up with linemen in my final two picks. If I can't trade down, I go Moreno, Gilbert, Louis Murphy and proceed the same way with the rest of my draft.
One week to go and I'll lock my first three picks in at: 1) Knowshon 2) Mohamed Massaquoi 3) Richard Quinn
Day One is a complete success IMO if we get any two of these: 1) Jeremy Maclin 2) Wells, Moreno or Brown. I used to be high on Wells because of his size and power, then I was high on Moreno because he's a Jets fan, but now, I gotta say I'd like to get Brown because of the work ethic and his later value. Any of the three would thrill me though. 3) Jarron Gilbert. 4) A starting-caliber offensive lineman. Woody is going to need a replacement eventually, as is Faneca, and to think that we could get through another full season without any injuries on our offensive line is a little naive. (Knock on wood). I'd love to get Unger, somehow. I've been pondering what our move would be if Andre Smith is there at 17.
You can see in my signature what i would like us to do, but i would just like to mention that i did those picks with the understanding that Maclin would be gone, if we were able to take Maclin the whole thing would just change. I like Moreno in he first, and i went with Bruton in the 4th because he is a good player, he wasn't always on a good team, and i know safety might not be the most glaring need, but the guy is a play-maker.
I agree with your picks (Moreno, Gilbert, Murphy) except on round 4 where i want a TE. then round 6 OL and round 7 a decent punter!
