Or any other 1st time head coaching hire.

Only 3 coaches have ever won the Super Bowl in their 1st head coaching job.

John Madden. Bill Parcells. Bill Cowher.

We have hired Groh, Edwards, and Mangini, the 3 stooges who have less coaching ability than Parcells or Madden have in their toe nail.

It's very, very long odds to win on a 1st time hire. When the hell is this crap owner going to realize that?

This is from brothermoose's post in the Martyball thread. It completely destroys your point.

Switzer was the head coach of Oklahoma...Jimmy Johnson was the head coach of Miami, and both won national championships. You have to consider those things.

Back to the original post. I'd be more concerned with getting a proven coach believe it or not. There have only been 5 coaches to take two different teams to a Super Bowl (Don Shula, Dick Vermeil, Bill Parcells, Mike Holmgren and Dan Reeves) and none of them won with both teams.

I have to admit defeat - my friend told me this yesterday and I should have looked it up.

This makes me favor Spags versus anyone other than Shanahan who I think will not come here.

Spags is my top choice, i just love the defensive looks he sets, getting as pass rush as he has this year after losing Strahan and Umi from that defense, sure looks good to me. I really want to give this guy a shot, and i hope we do and he wants to come.

That's a great post about the 5 coaches - only Vermeil won with the 2nd team, but lost with the Eagles of course.

It's really surprising when you think about it, but there have been many failures...Hank Stram, Jimmy Johnson, Tom Flores, George Siefert, and Mike Ditka are all former SB winning coaches who couldn't bring a different team to the Super Bowl.

It's a matter of what you think the team needs. I don't think that the Jets are in place to be making any Super Bowl runs. They need stability right now; they need a coach that establishes some identity and can groom a QB for the future. I don't think Spags necessarily does that. The Jets need to build up a strong foundation and identity; I don't think the Jets are in a "Super Bowl or bust" mode.

    Tom Flores gets "no credit."
Looking at that list -- youll see that there are hardly any "flukes" almost all of the guys (past 25 yrs) are considered great coaches. A few exceptions (Billick, Gruden, Switzer).

Oh, you want him as the DC then? I thought you were talking about HC. He can't do both. That's a recipe for disaster. And he certainly can't come here to run a 4-3 which is the only thing he knows when we have spent the last 3 years getting players who can actually play in the 3-4. Unless you would like to go back to square one and waste another 3 years.

Forget Spags - no more first time gambles. one more time; Out of the 14 head coaches in jets history, 10 of them have been 1st time coaches. 2 others were unsuccessful former head coaches.

The other two were successful head coaches (parcells and ewbank) and look what happened.

we dont need to waste another four years on some gamble.

I'm not Vickblows, but there are some talented and experienced coaches to choose from. Some (Shanahan, Bilick, etc.) even have Super Bowl rings. Again, I think the Jets need proven talent to bring stability to the organization.

I would take anyone with a proven track record over Spags ? Cowher (not happening), Shottenheimer (say what you want about the playoffs ? they guy is spectacular in the regular season?you have to get to the playoffs to win in them), Shannahan (who I absolutely hate).

It?s a short list ? I just don?t want to waste time with some newbie that may or may not work out (based on Jets history I would indicate that he WILL NOT WORK OUT regardless).

I think it will be Martyball at this point and I would be okay with that.

This team does not play the 3-4 effectively. They line up in a 3-4, but the linebackers can neither blitz or cover. It's a pathetic example of a 3-4. We took guys who were trained 4-3 and forced them into something they are not equipped to do. There isn't enough speed and quickness with this group for a 3-4. Spags or Shanny will do it for me. No Billek or Shottz. I always liked Shottz and felt bad for him when he lost, but I'm not willing to go down that road.

pass rush? what's that? (I've been watching Bryan Thomas get half way to the QB for 6 years)
