A few weeks before the All-Star break the bottom line was the Yankees had to play for the Wild Card being so far back of the Red Sox. Now, on July 20th, the Yankees are in an interesting position. Seven games back of the Boston Red Sox and 7 games back of the Cleveland Indians and the Wild Card. So which are the Yankees playing for right now? It is good to be in this position and it is bad. Good because the Yankees got closer to the Red Sox bad because they are 7 games back either way. If you are the Yankees you have to think division with 9 more games vs. Boston I believe. I guess the real answer is whatever gets them in the playoffs is what the Yankees are playing for. Thoughts?
They are playing to make the playoffs. Doesn't much matter which way it happens and besides I can't remember the last time the best team in baseball (record wise) won a ws anyway. Especially since most of the time in the last 6 years that has been the Yankees anyway.
Looks like only 6 more games vs. the Red Sox and 3 more vs. the Indians. Still capable, but the Yankees have to play very well the rest of the season. One more losing streak and the season will likely be lost.
Only 68 games remain in the season, just to get to 90 wins they have to go 42-26, possible but not likely imho. I think AL wild card and AL East will both take 93-94 wins, that's probably out of reach. Yankees are done.
