How does Rex not kick the field goal and then onside??? I thought Mick's thread was about that play, and in my present mood, I thought he was discussing the play that officially lost it for us. If that was any other coach but Rex, we're killing him right now. 7 points means shit when you're down 10. You have to extend the game. Plain and simple.
I thought it was the right call not going for the field goal on 4th. You waste too much time getting the field goal unit on the field and then kicking it. You aren't leaving any time to get down the field and score a td if you recover the onside kick. The problem was throwing a completed pass on 3rd down that doesn't stop the clock and doesn't get in the end zone. If you throw an incompletion on 3rd down, then you can kick the field goal on 4th.
Have to agree with you on this one. Odds are they lose anyway but you should always try to extend the game as long as you can.
This holds no water. You're still losing either way. You have to kick the onsides kick at some point no matter whether you scored 3 or 7. Once it's 4th down. I don't care if it's inches, you have to give your team a chance to extend the game. There was still a minute left. Plenty of time. Also, your 2nd part. What are the coaches for? They know the situation. FG unit HAS to be waiting on the sidelines regardless of whether or not the clock is running.
Sanchez took the decision out of Rex hands by completing the play in the middle of the field & not scoring. Time for special teams to setup for FG would've forced the Jets to simply throw hail mary passes to end the game (assuming they recovered onside kick).
It was a terrible playcall on 3rd down to throw on the goal line rather than in the endzone... But since that play happened and was completed, it would have wasted time for the FG crew to get on the field and attempt a FG which would have put the Jets at about 25 seconds to try and get the onside kick and then go for the TD.
Yeah, I didn't like it but I'm not as concerned with the play as I am with how we got there. Bad play in all three phases is very concerning.
That's better than nothing. And no, I'm not second guessing. I was screaming at the TV the whole time that play was happening. Watching it at a party with no other Jets fans and they all agreed. You have to extend the game. Anything can happen. This team has proven it before.
you're a great poster and I agree with almost every post you make, but if there's 25 seconds or 1 second left, throwing a hail mary is better than watching the other team kneel on it. Plain and simple.
How much time were you expecting on the clock after the jets kicked the fg & recovered the onside kick? Raiders started their drive with 30 seconds. That means without switching the offense for special teams, the Jets only managed to keep 30 seconds on the clock. Setting up the FG unit & then recovering the onsides kick could've left the offense with less than 15 seconds with no timeouts to score a TD and even without blitzing will Sanchez be able to avoid the Raiders D long enough to unleash one or two hail mary passes? Raiders D wouldn't even have to defend sidelines if Jets needed a TD. === FG is the right call .... assuming Sanchez threw the ball away on 3rd down.
The Raiders ran 2 plays, so there had to be more than 45 seconds left. I think there was still about 12 or 15 secs. left on the clock for the final snap. You have to extend the game. I don't understand how there's even an argument here. You can't win or tie a 10 point game with a TD. I'd rather take my chances recovering an onsides kick (THAT YOU HAVE TO TAKE REGARDLESS) than watch the other team close it out. Sorry, for the caps.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/boxscore?gid=20110925013&page=drives Perhaps I'm reading the logs wrong, but my interpretation is that the Raiders started their drive with 30 seconds. === You play for the best opportunity to score 10 points due to the time on clock. Because 3rd down didn't kill the clock, the Jets with FG & onsides kick might be left with less than 20 seconds and no timeouts. They took the riskier play during that drive to have an easier shot at the tying score. It's a philosophical argument really. I'm not saying your approach is definitely wrong but I don't think it provides the best shot at winning/tying the game. No timeouts, unable to play the middle & spike, plays to the sidelines are useless. Also, there's good chance Mark wouldn't even stand up long enough for the receivers to even run the length of the field.
If the 3rd down play is an incomplete pass or a play that stops the clock, you kick the FG. It would have taken at least 15 seconds off of the clock to get the FG unit on the field and ready to pick the ball.
I agree with you, but the 3rd down play killed the chance to do it. Rex would have had to go out on the field and drag Sanchez off it before he could send the kicker on. So I don't think it was really an option. Rex's decision was made by the play Sanchez had on 3rd down. Plus you have a defense on its heels, they are scrambling after a play to get set quickly and not give up 2 yards. the offense has a distinct advantage in the situation. But we just failed to capitalize again in that situation.
I would have kicked, but it's tough taking only three when you are so deep in enemy territory and ultimately need two scores.
I feel like I'm pounding my head on the wall in this thread. Any time is better than no time. Can that at least be admitted?? And, I've already pointed this out, I'm not 2nd guessing....I wanted to kick the FG before the play was even ran. You onside kick with about 40 secs. left, I'm guessing? Gives you at least 3 or 4 shots into the endzone...WITH A CHANCE TO GET TO OVERTIME. That's the goal here. Not to lose by 3. I'd rather lose by 7, with THE BALL IN OUR QB'S HANDS.
It's all about percentages. Here are the 2 scenarios. 1. Kick the field goal on 4th down. Recover the onside kick and then go over 50 yards with 0 timeouts in about 30 seconds to score a TD. 2. Try to get 2 yards on 4th down and score a TD. Recover the onside kick with 45 seconds left, and need to drive 15-20 yards to get into field goal range and make the FG. You honestly think scenario #1 is more likely??
How come Folk and Brunell aren't waiting on the sidelines with the ST unit? That 4th down play was with about 50 secs. to a minute left. Even if you take the 20 seconds to shift personnel, there's still 30 secs. left. Get the kick, and if you recover, you have a shot. You have no shot when the other team in kneeling. I don't care what the log says. The Raiders ran 2 plays. And there was about 10-12 secs. left when the final snap happened. You cannot win or tie a 10 point game with 1 score.
We beat the Texans with less time than that further down the field, so do I think it can happen? Yes. Can't happen when you don't score and Campbell is kneeling on the ball.
