Maybe not a fun topic, but my friends and I were discussing which losses hurt the most to us in our lives yesterday, and I thought it could be a good topic to talk about here.

Obviously the Jets have many tough losses and many ones that hurt badly. One stuck out in my mind clear as day though when the question was asked to me.

November 14, 2004: Baltimore Ravens at New York Jets
    [IMG]

The Jets had a 14-0 lead late in the first half, they were driving to add on to that lead. At minimum it should have been 17-0 at halftime. Instead, Lamont Jordan throws a half back pass that gets INTERCEPTED by Ed Reed, who took it 100+ yards for the TD. 14-7 at the half. The Ravens would take a 17-14 lead, then the Jets had plenty of chances to get the win, but played too conservative, kicked the field goal to send it to OT 17-17 and would eventually lose. Ravens-20 Jets-17 in FINAL -OT.

It hurt so much for many reasons. Nothing hurts more than losing a game you should have won, but the Jets could have won that game 50 different ways. I was so upset after the game, I just laid in my bed the rest of the night. Awful feeling. Anyone else remember that game?

Unfortunately, the Jets have many games to choose from in this discussion, so which game hurt you the most?

Losing to the Pats in general. Losing to the Bears also pissed me off pretty good. But overall just losing, I'm very consistent in that I'm always equally upset, after every loss. Last season I didn't care too much, I almost just wanted to get the season over with and move on.

AFC: Pittsburgh Steelers 20, New York Jets 17 (OT)

Doug Brien missing 2 FGs at the end of regulation and we lose in OT.

Had a little breakdown after that game.

I am too young to remember that game, but yes, the highlights made it seem quite brutal. If I were around then, it would probably top my list too.
Yes, that was definitely one of the worst Jets losses I experienced too. Then they had that NFL Replay with Bettis running his mouth the whole time, despite the fact he was completely worthless and contributed nothing to his team. Drove me nuts.

I was living in Pittsburgh at that time - one of the worst experiences as a Jet fan to see us choke that game away. It took a while to get over that game, then we lose that AFCCG against Pittsburgh years later and the nightmares returned.

The Mud Bowl . The 1982 AFC Championship Game.

The mere thought of it causes distress to me. I hate Don Shula to this day

Another really bad thing about that Steelers loss was that they were not very good. The following week they were BEAT DOWN by the Patriots, who went on to win the Super Bowl. Not saying the Jets would have beat the Patriots, but they would have given them a better fight. Awful.

AFCCG in the '98 season against the Broncos.

we have the lead at the half, and the easily beatable Falcons await us in the Super Bowl.
then uncharacteristic turnovers in the second half, and it all slips away.

that was our most complete team, and should have been the year.
started to feel there was a bit of a curse on the team after that..

98 AFCCG for sure. Double kick in the balls as my Aunt worked for the Falcons at the time and had Super Bowl tickets she would have given me.

Personally, it was the 2010 AFC Championship loss to Pittsburgh.

Long story short my old lady had close family ties to someone in the Packers Organization. A Packers / Jets Super Bowl wouldn't meant the world to me/us & I could've swung for tickets probably if that was the case. It also happened to be the 1st time since I was little kid that I actually truly believed they were going to be in the Superbowl. (big mistake)
I didn't believe in the 2009 AFCCG, I didn't believe in 04, 1998, I thought Denver was better... in the 80s they were good but you never thought they could actually do it and even if they got there like San Fran and the Giants were way better...

So the combination of believing it was going to happen- - and the Packers starting the day off by taking care of business just had me going into the game in too high of an emotional state (sports-wise I mean). For them to come out and lay a fuckin egg in the 1st half was just demoralizing as a fan. I was checked out by halftime

Nothing comes close. This was the original sports heartbreak for me. F-Gastineau for roughing the passer. That game was over.

Not likely, as years later, Herman Edwards revealed that Pennington had badly hurt his shoulder in the Steelers game.
