After hundreds of pages, in various threads, of various posters, myself included, hedging on Geno Smith I offer up the Apology Thread. Let me be the first...I was ADAMANT that we should have started Matt Simms over Geno Smith. From what I saw in the Giants game I was certain that this was going to be as ugly as it could get. Happily, Geno has proven me wrong. Yes, it was only one game...and...the season is long...BUT, the same things I've said about Simms hold true about Geno. In the preseason I didn't see the decisive decision making etc. I did in today's game. All the things I saw or didn't see. I saw "it" in today's game. You know what I also saw in today's game...something that I was surprised at. He doesn't show a whole lot of emotion...what I mean is...the look on his face when he had 35 seconds to win a game...he was like the "Ice" man...coooool.....even after the FG...cool...interesting. It's going to be an interesting season to watch. My apologies Geno Smith!
Very impressive of you putting your name and pride on the line! That makes you raise above the rest of the posters here, regardless of what "camp" you belong to. Yes, he still might suck for the remaining 15 games. ^^ But - he was not the reason why we almost lost the game today. Which is pretty fucking spectacular considering he is a rookie at the most important position in the game. This will all improve, as the season goes along. And I'm not talking about Geno specifically, I'm talking about Geno and the offense as they move along. This was the first piece MM can build on. From now on, for each and every game the fluidity of the offense should improve bit by bit as MM tailors this offense to Geno's strengths. I did not miss Sanchez today.
He looked poised today, no doubt about that. After looking very bad on those two plays in the first half, he brushed himself off and had a GREAT rest of the game. That is very tough to do as a rookie, let alone in your first game. He deserves any and all the credit he will receive for this game, and lets just hope it continues.
He's certainly more polished than what we saw in the Giants game. I will say that we're pretty much set for 2013 with Geno/Simms. Now if we only had a wr that other teams respect.
I don't think so. If we were playing the Jaguars and won by 1 point and Geno had the day he had we could probably say premature. He did what he did against, arguable, the best defense he'll face all year long. Most DEFINITELY the best D-Line he'll face outside of practice. That in itself is impressive. He earned my Apology.
Was one start.. but he did look so much better than I thought. I was heavily doubting his ability to do anything. While I'm not "sanchez" guy. I don't see mark ever taken another snap for the jets, barring injury to smith. I expected the worst today. He proved me wrong. One game, safe to assume next week going to be a much different story. With that said, I went from a non-believer to a believer that maybe the jets were right to draft this guy.
He was what I thought he would be (sorry, Denny Green). I figured the Giants game was a product of Mornhingweg just wanting to see Geno let it fly often and to hell with the results. I thought that this game would be called more conservatively. I didn't expect a pristine performance. You hate seeing that red zone fumble. But he came back strong. A big part of this game is how you pick yourself up after adversity. I was never encouraged by Sanchez' sad-sack expressions and body language after an INT. Geno has more swagger. Thursday night is a tall order. It might get worse before it gets better. The D was good today. It'll have to be better on Thursday. And it would be nice to have a running game, too. All I ask from Geno then is to not cough it up in the red zone. Either one.
Good post Mezzavo. Time will tell, but so far it looking promising. I'll say this about Geno, he is very smart and he learns very fast. He tends not to make the same mistake twice, he is quick on his feet on broken plays, and he can take the pressure of the NFL. He is super confident and does not seem to get rattled when things don't go right. All good attributes. I think he was watching the right films after all.
I think his ankle definitely effected him in the Giants game. When you aren't able to put your lower body into your throws, you lose velocity and the ability to fit it into windows like you need to in the NFL. ankle clearly looked good today, we saw him driving his throws and some good scrambling
I think the OP is simply saying that he was wrong about today's game. There was/is a lot of debate about Smith's skills, his readiness, or his deservingness to be named the Jets starting QB. But then it escalated to a very specific critique that he was so bad / not ready / undeserving that he would be an enormous negative in today's game specifically, and be the blatantly obvious explanation for a Jets loss. The posts along the lines of, (paraphrasing) "this is going to be a disaster. Geno is going to make Sunday embarrassing." Those that were at that level of specificity have every reason to own up with a mea culpa - they were wrong. It doesn't mean that they believe he's the answer or that it's going to be an upward trend for the rest of the year, but Geno Smith was absolutely not a black hole of suck and confusion that some people thought he would be today.
Can I say I told you so? :lol: I know its just one game, but he showed some great stuff. I was most impressed by his poise. He received no help at all.
Very decisive especially running when the pocket collapses and seems very even keeled. He said awhile ago he does not get pre-game butterflies or nervous ever. Not a bad thing for a QB in NY. Its so great to have a qb that can run with some good instincts. He keeps drives going.
