On twitter multiple sources are saying that Henne and Brady broke the NFL record for passing yards in a game with 906. Dolphins beat writer

    Jeff Darlington
Incredible stat by the Herald's @DavidJNeal ... Tonight's game broke a 25-year-old NFL record for most passing yards (906) by two teams.

I tweeted him and asked him what about Marino and Obrien 927 passing yards in 1986. His response was

    JeffDarlington Jeff Darlington
Tonight's game had 933 total yards -- but record is based on NET.

Can anybody explain this to me?

Yep record is based on total pass yardage minus yardage lost due to sacks.

Our game was still better, Jets tied it at 0:00 of the 4th quarter and won in OT. Theirs was a blowout at the end.

In '86 the 2 QBs not only accumulated yds but they accumulated points in a close game that was a shootout. They combined for 96 yds, last night they combined for 62

Actually the Jets-Colts 1972 game that ended with the Jets winning 44-34 was probably better than either. Namath threw for 496 yards and 6 TDs, while Johnny U threw for 396 yards and 2 TDs. Took awhile to find some highlights but they are here.

Namath got into another shootout with Baltimore a few years earlier where the numbers may have been even more gaudy if I remember right.

How could that possibly have been better than a 51-45 OT shootout where the QBs threw fr more yards, more TDs and led thir O's to more points in a closer game?

Probably because of the people who were in it. It was a classic.

Sure but the '86 game was a better game.

I was at that game and left to beat the traffic with the Jets down a couple TDs. Got home just in time to see Walker's last score. I still can't understand why there are so many people here who don't believe O'Brien was a great QB.

At least you didn't miss the TD.

I loved O'Brien as a kid and he had a great year and a half('85 and part of '86) but he didn't do it long enough. He had a great, accurate arm but he took too many sacks looking for the big play.

Yeah, we had it on the radio so we knew what was going on. We probably broke about 6 laws trying to get there for the end.

Haha, I did the same thing for the Monday Night Miracle.

O'Brien was good, not great. You need to win at least a playoff game to be considered great.

Brady should get extra consideration as 93.7% of his passes go to white receivers.

Context of the times Junc. That is one of the earliest games I clearly recall watching with my Dad.

Unitas, Most completions ever in his CAREER.

    Namath 15/28 for 496 and 6TD's.

By the 80's the game had evolved quite a bit.

My friends all wanted to leave that game early, and I refused.

Since that game, I always stay with the Jets to the very end.

(I did miss the entire Miracle at the Meadowlands, though.)

I never thought of O'B as a great quarterback.
