http://www.nyjets101.com/2013/05/12...cut-return-to-the-new-york-jets-in-the-works/ Come June 1st he may be cut,I think he can return and become a big contributer once again.
Though Im not into the Gadget plays but with Kerley, Sanchez/Geno/Garrad, and Smith on the field you will never know where the pass will come from so defenses will have to play honest. Brad Smith is capable of running routes as well so why not
I don't believe Buffalo will cut him in June. Don't really see the incentive. They have plenty of cap space, and are actually getting more when Fitzpatrick's base salary of $4.25M comes off on June 2nd. Smith's prorated signing bonus isn't large enough to justify spreading it over two years, especially at this point in free agency. I think they're more likely to see if the new staff can find a more significant role that justifies his salary and simply wait till the final round of cuts to decide whether to cut him or keep him. Maybe try to pry a 7th round pick from a team during that time, though that doesn't seem likely to happen.
The Jets always knew how to use Smith best. Although with Westhoff gone, I'd be interested to see if he was as effective
Doubtful, I expected him to be cut already. We still need to resign Byrd to a contract and that's going to cost around 10 million a year, we need to free up as much dead cap space as we can. We have plenty of returners and with Stevie, Woods, Rogers, Graham, Goodwin, and Easley I doubt he makes the team as a WR. I just don't see any value in keeping him around to that contract while letting a player like Byrd possibly walk after this season...
Doubtful about what? That he's kept? I probably agree with that, but my main point is that I don't see the advantage of cutting him in early June. What if the Bills have injuries at WR in camp? It's not like the Bills don't have the money to sign their draft picks. The dead money hit is only 500K for Smith next year so that really isn't a major issue.
Based on what? PFF graded him the top coverage safety in the league. He forces fumbles and has great ball skills. What's not to like?
http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Bills&Year=2013 <--- Bills can save $2,750,000 if they cut him but is there anything for them to do in Free Agency? FA is pretty slim pickings right now so I'm not so sure if Bills will follow through on the cut. If Bills turn him lose, I really hope Idzik gives him a buzz to see how much he's asking for. Still a big Brad Smith fan but I do admit that I'm unable to separate my emotions from evaluating him. That kickoff return against the Steelers in regular season was one of my favorite Jet Moments in Rex's second year.
I, for one, am not really interested in smith at all. The whole point of option was to have a change of pace in the backfield to a really immobile QB. But if we need to run wildcat plays, it's pretty much the same concept as running say read option with the qb. Both the jets with geno, and the bills with Manuel have qbs that can run without compromising on athletic ability or passing ability. Why not just have geno run a read option than waste a roster spot on smith? It's the same reason why he's getting cut from the bills. Unless there is an injury to Manuel, his skills are redundant and a step down. I'd rather see if we can uses spot to fit in another Wr maybe or another te than go after smith.
Its pretty likely he'll be cut eventually, but I'd bet the new coaches want to see him in the camps first to determine what, if anything, they can use him for. Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin just tore up the mini camp all weekend long, and prior to the draft during the veteran camp, Marrone said that TJ Graham was the best player on the field. Brad is probably good enough to fill in at the bottom of the depth chart, but is it worth having a $4 million dollar 5th receiver? He may end up cut. There's also Da'Rick Rogers, if he can show anything. There's also this 6'5'' UDFA receiver that had one of the best player camps this weekend. Who knows if these guys factor in or continue to look good. I agree that if I were the Bills, I'd at least have him until the end of training camp to see how things shake out, but I dont think its out of the realm of possibility they've already made up their minds to go with the young talent (that they handpicked, by the way) and dont want or need Brad's cap hit.
