Did they get him from the WWW (writer's waiver wire)?

    Beat writer news:
Looks like we'll have a new beat writer for the NYDN pretty soon, as DJ is leaving for a new gig. I'm pretty bummed about this actually. DJ always had solid content and has been a GREAT follow on Twitter. Always engaging with Jets fans there and on podcasts. Sorry to see him leave, but looking forward to seeing what he does next.

I didn't know you could slander the Fins? Just about anything you say about them is likely to be better than the reality.

And my earlier point about working for a newspaper being the equivalent of a 1930 job in the Pony Express still stands.

The outfit I work for had a couple of hundred newspapers being delivered every day two years ago and we're down to a few dozen now.

DJ has been the best writer in a long time. I pay the $22/m for NYDN subscription, and he was a big part of it. Gotta check out the new guy.

Anyway, best of luck to DJ. You did a good job for us! Go Jets! Squish the Fish!

Man I was just starting to like DJ too. Couldn't stand him at first but he had a very blunt, realistic outlook on things.

Damn this guy was the best beat writer and training camp tweeter IMO, sorry to see him go.

Didn't he quote or show a DWC post on twitter like a week or so ago?

    Then he left.

Was like.....I can't deal with this. I'm out.

He was aight. I didn't see the big deal. Yes he was interactive with fans but most of them start out that way, he would have gotten tired of it eventually. Connor Hughes posted on this site for a hot minute.

I didn't see all that much from DJ in terms of extra insight.

    No great loss.

He was fine, decent on Penny's YouTube channel but how can a paper in NY not find a reporter that is an actual Jets fan to do the reporting?

Look at this website. Why would you ever want a Jets fan covering the Jets?

Historically, you'd never know who a writer rooted for and they took great pride in reporting what happened objectively, good or bad - they told you what happened and let you draw your own conclusions; broadcasters strived to not be "homers" even with long-term attachments to a single team. Columnists were charged with offering opinion and did not refrain from calling the baby ugly when it was. The cost cutting that has taken place in media in the last decade or so now has created the Frankenstein of the "reporter/columnist."

Sportswriters often let their audience know their favorite team(s).

    They can't help themselves...

Looks like Hughes is leaving too! Man, looks like Cimini and Costello are All we Got.
I’ll miss Hughes, mostly b/c of the frequent podcasts coming up clutch given I’m in the car often.

Might have no choice but too pay for the TOJ Patreon sub!

Am I the only one who reads it as Hughes is taking the Post job?

Print media is so dead. Like many other entertainment industries they're struggling with how to make money off of digital content and print content is no longer wanted by the majority of the content consumers.

The place I work is a senior community that in the last 5 years has seen demand for newsprint drop by 50%+. We used to get hundreds of copies of newspapers and other periodicals delivered every day and we're at about a hundred today. This in a population of ages 62+ where virtually everybody was a newsprint consumer in 2000.

I know a lot of people don't like Hughes but this is a big loss. He was connected and had some real good insight whether it be breaking news or just the thoughts among people in the building. He teased staying in NY with the Jets/Giants reference, let's hope he does.

However it's important to note that Dick Young was a monster long before events led us that way.
