There are a few NT's available in this upcoming draft for the Jets'. Branch is a long shot, but Paul Soliai will be available & seems like a real player. He's big & fast. He is like a must have & is rated in the top 100 players. I wouldn't care if the Jets' drafted him early...(aka Schlegel). I wouldn't be mad, cause the defense needs this position manned to make everyone else play better. This guy has a good motor & good speed for his size. Makes Pouha look like a puppy. Tim Echols is also a choice. Walter Thomas & Louis Leonard are also decent choices. Paul Soliai is defineitely the next best rated choice after after Branch. I would love to see this guy in Jets' Green. Actually, I hope the Jets' have at least 2 of these guys on the team this season. Soliai might turn out to be the best of all of them. :up: I wouldn't mind Jets' trading next years draft picks for this years early 2nd & 3rd rounders. If Jets' can get some pass rushers, NT's, OL & CB & maybe a TE.....There set in my eyes. They would be able to play with anybody. Poll : More than ....1....choice allowed.
Ryan McBean and Tank Tyler also are getting looked at as NT's at the moment. I'd like either of them at the 89, or even a bit above that for McBean.
True, but I see Tank Tyler more as a DE, in the 3-4 defense. What do u think ? Thats how N.E. & Chargers would play him.
He's 6'2" which is an inch short for a 3-4 DE and he ran a 5.29 40. I think he's probably not gonna wind up on the outside. Turk McBride (6'2" 4.89) and Ryan McBean (6'4" 5.06) are both probably a bit more likely to wind up as a 3-4 DE, although McBean also looks like he could be an intriguing option at NT.
Size wise, you can't beat Walter Thomas. But his demotion for Oklahoma and his very limited playing time kind of rules him out as a Mangini type, so I doubt we pick him. If we are going to pick a guy that leaves Solari, if we can get him with the second 2nd rouond pick or a third rounder I'd be ok with it.
DE's in the 3-4 defense are bigger & slower than traditional DE's in the 4-3 defense. The better defense's have DT's playing the DE position. Look it up. :up: Look at San Diego & the Pats'. See what they do. See how they line-up & the size & weight of the positions .:up:
the only real NT on that list is paul soliai. branch is too tall and not big enough to play NT, plus hes more of a pass rusher. walter thomas is garbage...i really like marcus thomas, but he needs to gain another 10 pounds maybe. he could be a steal in the 4th round
I don't recall seeing him play, but reading about him...it states he has alot of talent. Soliai, I was watching him in the Hula Bowl & he is very quick & hustles alot. I can see him helping the defense alot. I think the Jets' will need 2 NT's & rotate them for the defense to have good success. This will help the players & have depth in case of injuries. If the Jets' can strengthen OL & DL, I think they have enough pieces in place to make a run. :up:
I voted Soliai - it's just the practical choice. We can get him in the 3rd, which may be a round early, but we're near the end of 3. That way we can address other positions and STILL come awaywith a much needed NT

Justin Harrell is a 3-4 DE, not an NT. Of the names listed above I like Johnson, Branch and Solai the best. W/ that said, there is no easy fix at NT. You can't just bring in a 360lb monster and expect that everything is gonna be better in our 3-4. Frankly D rob was more than sufficient at the spot, and the only thing that is needed is better depth. A luxury would be a true NT, that would allow D rob to slide over to DE where he'd dominaate.
marcus thomas will go in the early third or late 2nd IMO. hes got too much talent and a team will bite, because i find it hard to believe he'll be around that late, not to mention we have no 4th rd draft pick.
Noted on the size difference. The reason I think Tyler is an unlikely fit for a 3-4 DE is that he really is slower than the people you normally see there. 5.29 is just not end material. If you look at the good 3-4 ends around the NFL today you mainly see people who managed to break 5 seconds in the 40. That's one of the things, along with height, that people look for in a DT they project at 3-4 end.
I voted for "Other." There are a lot of guys on that list but I'm not really sold on any of them. I really think that kid Echols from KState could be a nice rotational guy, but I don't view him as the answer. Branch is so obviously a 3-4 DE it's incredible. I feel like Soliai should be much better than he is. Marcus Thomas isn't sniffing the first day. Where did Taj Hawthorne go last year? He was supposed to be a first day pick and then he got busted. This guy got tossed off his team, so besides the fact that he has character issues, he's been out of the game for a while. I don't really know much about Leonard. How about Howie Fuiamano from UNLV? He's short, but the guy is seriously stout and powerful. I can't believe he hasn't been mentioned. -X-
I felt the same way about Branch, but apparently there are whispers that scouts feel otherwise andd see him as a 3-4 NT, and little else.
For those talking about speed at 3-4 DE, 3-4 DEs are run-stoppers, not pass rushers like in the 4-3. There are no real NTs in this year's draft and DRob was the best player on our DLine last year. There's no reason for everyone to be obsessed with replacing him.
The Jets run D blew chunks last year. That's why everybody is obsessing about replacing D-Rob and fantasizing about trading Vilma. Even in the second half when the Jets were snuffing kittens to make the playoffs their run D was poor.
We need DEs, not a new NT. How does everyone forget about Kimo von Papermache and Shaun "I was pretty good once, you remember that?" Ellis? DRob wasn't being pushed back, the sides of our line were.
