+1000000000000000 Favre's ridiculously poor play was the biggest single reason we collapsed down the stretch last season. Thinking of his performance in week 16 against Seattle still makes me nauseous.
And it's the last meaningful contract that someone signs. One-day contracts are like honorary degrees; spectacle and ass-kissing that have no value whatsoever beyond sentiment.
Thanks for the link. That was a wide range of players. I'm not sure one stood out any more than another.
Not voting in the poll because I'm not a Jets fan, but: I wouldn't have wanted to deal with his circus and his absurd selfishness. He's a self-parody of a guy who used to be a good QB.
the seattle game was disgusting. How the gameplan is to throw the ball 35 times in the Seattle snow with a QB who's arm is clearly in pain is beyond me. And their OL was all backups, and they handled the Jets with ease. i really hope that was mangini handcuffing schotty and not what BS does on his own. My instincts tell me it was the round little napoleons doing.
We sought him. He didn't seek us. How can he be a disgrace? A mercenary, an aging one at that who couldn't bounce back from injury, sure. But a disgrace? Really?! The argument could be made for Vinny being a disgrace for signing with the Pats. Or even Chad with the Fish. And I still consider them honored Jets. But how did Favre slight us to the point of being a disgrace? When he "retired" a Jet, I'm sure it was more a forced retirement from our FO because of his constant uncertainty. There's no other explanation for us releasing him prior to the draft except that the NY Jets wanted to move forward without him. When you look back at your life as a fan many years from now, knowing that you saw him play at all - much less in a Jets jersey, you will consider it to have been a privilege. It might not be today or tomorrow, but someday in the future when new fans are looking up to this guy like we look at the Jordans and Gretzkys of the world, then you'll appreciate his short time here. His only fault is that he went out like a dog, like most people who retire too late (Namath, Mays, Ali, etc.). And no one will remember him as a Jet like people forget Namath was a Ram, except us. It's history, nothing more - nothing less. And I'm glad he didn't tarnish his any further. The archives wil lalways remember him giving it one last shot...as a Jet. Now, having said all that. If he signs with the Pats in Week 3 or 4, he's a disgrace because he doesn't have the cherished history of a Chad or Vinny and he's a mercenary who's coming back into our division.
As Yogi would say, "It ain't over until it's over." This question should instead be asked at the end of the season... Or maybe the end of the following season! Never count Favre out!
I am wondering how some guys blame last seasons collapse on favre. Seriously, the coach knew he was hurt and could not throw the ball, yet mangini kept having favre go downfield. We had a great run game last season, when favre got hurt why didnt we just lean on the run, at times it looked like we abandoned it. Or if mangini knew favre couldnt pass, then why not make the qb change. My point is, how can farve be blamed for the collapse?
Favre's arm was mroe than good enough, he was making bad decisions like he was most of the year. W/ that said it wasn't all on Favre obviously, jenkins was hurting and that hurt our D and Mangini looked lifeless but the mian reason we stunk was b/c of favre.
It was also tough to bench Favre because we only had Clemens behind him and of course Favre's sacred streak that couldn't be snapped. A wounded Favre is still better than a healthy Clemens but we could have gone more with the run and used Favre as a decoy, since at he time nobody really knew he was hurt.
i'll believe its over when he goes an entire season without playing. If a team with a legit shot to win it all this year loses there QB for the season...a la Tom Brady last year. I think we'll start to hear more rumors about Favre filling in. I still think if no one picked him up last year. Beli-douche would have tried to sign him up to fill in.
Just to back up my claim...line from a Favre story just posted on ESPN. In an interview posted on Sports Illustrated's Web site, Favre added another subtle twist to this endlessly open-ended story: "I truly, truly believe it's over. But if someone calls Nov. 1, who knows?" Why is he such a douche?
I don't completely blame Favre for fucking up our season last year, I blame the organization for signing him. And even with his annual offseason tomfoolery, I still find Favre a more tolerable character than Elway or Marino. Part of me was excited to see a future hall of famer playing for the Jets, but I never really wanted him here so I can't say I'm glad he retired as a Jet.
