How many times are we going to hire defensive geniuses and see it come up short? Even Bill Parcells came up short. The Jets should change their identity overnight by hiring an experienced, offensive-mind to be Head Coach. And please stop taking other teams' coordinators and giving them their first head coaching job. Just hire a guy who has already made a living as a successful head coach. While we're at it, hire a head coach and let HIM pick his GM. No more bean-counters making personnel decisions from players to coaching staff. Gruden is obviously at the top of my list. The guy specializes in quarterbacks - the one position that has eluded us since 1969.
Three ridiculous statements here. 1. Where do you think most head coaches are before they become a head coach? As either an offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator. 2. If a head coach is already successful, why would his current team let him go? You don't become a jobless head coach by being successful. 3. A head coach should NOT pick a GM. That's absurd. No one does that.
These threads reek lately. People need to stop feeling so desperate and saying incredibly desperate things. I feel I'm about to go into hibernation on this board for while. Wow. You could make an argument for the HC to demand being the GM and HC. A HC doesn't pick the teams GM for a reason.
Pettine and Mangini with the Browns. Parcells with the Jets. That's 3 head coach hirings prior to GM hirings from the Jets family tree alone. Never say never until you google the facts.
1-I'm not saying a head coach doesn't have coordinator experience - I'm saying pick a head coach who has been a head coach. 2-I didn't say take a current head coach, I suggest a head coach who isn't coaching. 3-Parcells picked GMs.
Gruden has had one real good season out of a quarterback and that's with Rich Gannon. Just because he hypes himself as a quarterback guru on ESPN segments doesn't really mean it's true.
Not all former D coordinators are like him when they become head coaches. Remember the history. He took over the Jets as HC and basically turned over the O to Schotty. When the O suffered he apologized to the fans and promised to turn over a new leaf and be a head coach and not a glorified D coordinator. When that didn't work out (because he never really did what he said he was going to do) he cried about it and apologized giving us again his "I've gotta be me" song and dance. The bottom line is you have to coach both sides and be in charge.
Yes he is. I said on the last board I posted on that I'll bet that Mike Pettine wins the AFC Championship (if not a SB) before Rex does. Mike Pettine is a quality, no-nonsense coach. His old man is a High School coaching legend in PA, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure that Pettine learned a thing or two from his dad. I think he definitely left the Jets, not only to further his own career, but because he was sick of Rex's schtick, lack of discipline and holding players accountable. I wish we had fired Rex and kept Pettine.
There's a huge difference between a head coach being hired first and the head coach PICKING THE GM. Seriously?
