I have been hearing alot of...well we'll get a nice compensatory for Robby...Sorry, no comp: If you expect the Jets to get a 2021 compensatory pick for losing Anderson, fuhgettaboutit. Yes, he agreed to a lucrative deal with the Panthers (a reported two years, $20 million), but the Jets have signed too many free agents to qualify for a pick. Overthecap, which is highly accurate with its 32-pick compensatory projections, predicts the Jets will get shut out. Again.

The key to getting compensatory picks is drafting well. If you draft well, you'll lose players in free agency, and you won't have to sign new ones to replace them. If JD is competent, we'll start getting compensatory picks in the next couple years. Otherwise, we'll keep getting shut out.

We're getting pretty desperate if we're concerned about some lousy 6th round pick we might have picked up in a year. I guess a team that is in as bad a shape as we seem to be right now WOULD care about something this meaningless.

I never expected us to land a comp pick in 2021, so this is whatever in my mind.

We won't get a comp pick because we signed players to around the same deal. McGovern got pretty close to the same. Next year we won't see much change on comp picks. But all our deals we signed this year were one year or 3 with an easy out after 1. This means if we draft well most those players will be gone and we won't need to spend to replace. Then if those players sign elsewhere and we don't have to spend to replace we get comp picks the following year. The more they sign for the better the comp pick. For instance if Perriman plays well he will be due a bigger check (Probably similar to what Anderson got or more) therefore if we draft someone we feel can replace him we don't have to sign one and will be due a comp pick. As long as we keep a flow of good players through the draft we will be in on the continuous comp pick group.

JD's Comp Picks will be for 2022 or beyond. 2021 will be a wash anyway. JD made a lot of 1 year deals with drafting well in mind. Have some patience :)

He signed back too many bums

didn’t need Jordan Jenkins, didn’t need maluet, didn’t need burgess, etc

Let those guys walk so we can get comp picks. We got them off the street anyway, they can be replaced by other guys off the street

Everyone he signed back would have had to be replaced. Those replacements would have cancelled our comp picks anyway. If you don't know how comp picks work maybe you shouldn't try to act like it. We needs olb and Jenkins isn't bad. We still need cbs, maulet wouldn't have got us a comp pick because no one would pay him enough to count for anything.

The Jets don’t have good enough players going elsewhere to get compensatory picks yet. Will take a year or two to get to that point.

    1. So when did Jets drafted well, to the point where these compensation picks matter like that? [They NEVER did.]
    2. They can't even draft well with their own seven picks in any given year. They pick the likes of Stephen Hill, Vernon Gholston and Dslob et al. Getting the drafting up to mediocrity would be the first order of the day, not worrying about comp picks.

To me, comp picks are an indication of mis-management. When half your team walks, that's not good. Cap mis-management can lead to losing top players. Ya, you get a comp pick, whippie.

Let's say we can't afford Jamal Adams and he walks. We get a comp pick.

    I'd rather we had Jamal.

Ya, so a GM that manages the roster and manages the cap over time and find ways to keep his best players will almost never have comp picks.

    Comp picks are for LOOSERS!

I disagree. Are you saying that you think Ozzie Newsome is a loser? If so, then ROFLMAO!!! Your logic is an epic fail. GMs who draft poorly (losers) need to sign FAs to get better and make up for their failings in the draft. GMs who draft well know that they are eventually going to have to let some players walk because they are re-signing most of their players to second, more expensive contracts, and can't fit everyone under the cap. They also know that they can always upgrade some position. They can allow a good player to walk who is asking for too much money, and replace him with a player who may be as good or better at a cheaper cost.

Congratulations you reply to yourself. That said neither one of yourselves can say comp picks aren't important. Look at the teams that are consistently contenders. Most like the Patriots and Raven build comp picks. See what they do is they draft well and sign decent deals in FA. They get good players that make other players around them look better. They resign the good players they can and trade what they can of whats left. Then they let the ok ones they can't walk and get comp picks. Pats got 4 this year. Probably more next year. For teams that draft well that's great, especially considering they got 2 3rd round comp picks. This year 2 extra 3rd rounders could be 2 starting caliber wideouts.

Interesting fact the tops five team to earn comp picks since they became a thing in 1994.

    1. Ravens
    T2. Patriots
    T2. Cowboys
    4. Packers
    5. Rams

Seems most of those teams have been pretty decent at drafting and making the playoffs recently. Some have even had great comp picks.
