Despite widespread calls from fans, insiders and media outlets to oust Todd Bowles as Jets head coach going into the bye week Jets management decided otherwise but did not rule out all possible changes. Here's what was published last week following the debacle wrought by the Buffalo Bills: "Bowles said Monday he has no immediate plans to change his coaching staff, but he didn't rule out changes in the near future. " 'We're reevaluating everything,' Bowles said. 'As the days go by, we'll see.' " And yesterday Newsday had this: "Bowles promised to evaluate himself and the team during the bye and consider changes on his staff and to the lineup. On Monday, he said he wouldn’t change the coaches’ roles 'at this time' and that he still was considering player changes." So, I guess everything is okay in Jetland.
The fact that nobody lost their job over the Buffalo debacle is just unacceptable. At the absolute bare minimum, Bates should have been given his walking papers.
I fully expected Bowles to still be here. Nobody wants to fire anyone near Thanksgiving or Christmas if they can help it. Bowles will finish out the season IMO. Whatever happens after that is anyone's guess. If/when he gets the boot, I wish him luck back in a DC role elsewhere. I don't dislike the man at all (in fact I like him), he just isn't very good and it's not working. Disappointed yet again, but thrilled about Sam. If the Jets ruin him, though, I'll scream. Don't make me do it.
Well you heard it from the HC.. No need for changes in the CS as the team is playing like a well oiled machine.
The truth is the captain is going down with the ship. He already threw his CS under the bus once and time has proven that he is the problem, not just the staff. Nothing he can do about it now but wait for the guillotine to drop at end of season. I’m not a Bowles supporter but what is firing him or making changes to the staff going to do? Jets problems are deeper than just Bowles, I would be surpised if anyone they bring in is going to turn this around with the way Mac has been missing in the draft. Maybe a defensive scheme change can help some. The problems on offense need many draft picks to fix, unless Mac trades back the high pick they will have next year and accumulates picks that are used to build up the offense, this offense is going to be bad for the next two years.
when you don’t know good from bad you can’t tell what changes need made. It’s not just in game adjustments, but roster construction, game planning, and self evaluation that this staff is terrible at. So in other words everything it takes to run a successful franchise.
Yeah its almost as if they want to tank the season anyway. We're 3-7 and quickly declining, but lets make sure that we don't change anything. I can't reason why they wouldn't make a change somewhere because you can't keep rolling out the same team and coaching staff week after week and be looking like the worst team in the NFL right now. Perhaps Bowles is re-evaluating his career during the bye because he certainly doesn't seem like he even wants to coach this team.
Are you really surprised? I never thought he would be fired. Even though I think he deserved to be fired, I'm not one who normally favors HCs being fired in the middle of a season. If something could positively be gained and there was someone qualified to take over, it would be one thing, but there is no one qualified to take over, it would just lead to more chaos, and I don't think anything positive could come out of it. Bowles should definitely be fired at the end of the season, but for now, he can at least hold things together and can pretty much guarantee us of a top 5 draft pick. Even though none of the rest are qualified to be a HC, just the change itself might energize and inspire the players and cause them to win a game or two the rest of the season. I want the top 3-5 draft pick.
This season is lost anyway. Nothing would be gained by making a change. Things would probably just get worse, more chaotic and be even more embarrassing. Even if the players did get energized and manage winning 2-3 games, what would that accomplish? The only thing it would accomplish would be to mess up our draft position, and knowing the Johnsons, they might even turn around and just hire whomever took over as the new HC. At this point, they might as well tank and try to get as high a draft pick as they can as long as they definitely plan to fire Bowles at the end of the season. It could improve their chances of being able to trade down, garner a 2nd round pick, and maybe and additional pick or two, and still get a very good-great player that can help this team. Now if Bowles is retained, probably nothing can be gained unless he does re-evaluate his philosophy and approach and make radical changes. I think the chances of that are probably slim and none, however. If he is retained, it won't matter even if we wind up with the #1 pick, Bowles will screw it up.
I agree with most of this, but not that the offense will definitely be bad for the next two years. If Mac or hopefully, the new GM, signs a quality edge rusher in FA, upgrades the OL depth, and adds a new starting LG or C,adds another TE and WR, then drafts a new LT and adds a RB and adds some more pieces via the draft, with a quality HC/OC, then I think the offense can take a positive step forward next season. The big question is will the Johnsons do the right thing and fire both Bowles and Mac? Will they further hire the right new GM and allow him to hire the new HC, or better yet, will they hire an experienced football man as VP of Football Operations and allow him to make all decisions regarding the team? That remains to be seen, but the odds are against us.
I honestly believe that unless Mac changes his philosophy about drafting OL with higher draft picks, this team will end up with Bosa as their top draft pick next year and the offense will suffer once again.
I agree. That's why I want Mac fired. Hopefully, then the new GM would see that the offense needs to be stressed for several reasons: first and foremost that a team needs a very good offense in order to succeed and acknowledge that the Jets' present offense isn't very good; second in order to restore balance to the team; and third, but just as importantly that if Sam is to succeed, they need to protect him with a much better OL and give him some weapons with which to work.
Not mad at all, but even the Rams with the big names they have on defense couldn’t stop an elite offense, Rams defense gave up 51 points to a rookie QB, who has so many skilled players around him, he doesn’t have to worry about who is going to make plays for them. Bosa would be nice, but if the jets can’t score more than 17 points a game what difference does it make? I would like to add that unless a defensive player is a HOF talent like a Khalil Mack, a very good offensive line can neutralize him. So unless Bosa is considered Khalil Mack talent then I would be pissed if jets don’t strengthen the offense just to draft a Leonard Williams type player. Not that Williams is a bad defensive player but he’s no Khalil Mack.
I won't be mad as long as the OL and offense gets upgraded. The thing is, the OL badly needs a blue chip talent on the left side, and top OL rarely make it to free agency(next year is no different) while Edge will have a few decent to good FA's. It is more likely that we upgrade Edge in free agency and LT in the draft than vice versa IMO.
If we manage to sign one of the pass rushers poised to hit free agency then I wouldn't take Bosa, I'd draft our future LT. It is still food for thought though, imagine signing a guy like Fowler or Clowney still drafting Bosa, one of the weakest parts of the team becomes one of its best.
