SAN FRANCISCO - Eric Mangini refused to acknowledge what seemed obvious: The Jets' defense was no match for Mad Mike.

Mike Martz - that is, the 49ers' offensive coordinator, a passing-game guru.

"Compared to what Mike normally does with shifts and motions, it wasn't anywhere close to that," Mangini said after the Jets' 24-14 loss to the 49ers Sunday at Candlestick Park. "It wasn't that exotic. It wasn't different than anything we've seen ... or anticipated."

    It didn't look that way.

Continuing to struggle against the pass, the Jets surrendered 285 yards to neophyte starter Shaun Hill, who completed 28 of 39 passes, including two for touchdowns. In the last four games, the Jets have allowed 1,285 passing yards.

In this case, it wasn't just the numbers, it was how the 49ers got the numbers. The Jets' secondary, appearing confused and indecisive at times, left far too many receivers uncovered.

The most glaring example was a 4-yard touchdown pass to Frank Gore, who was wide open on a swing out of the backfield. Dime back Drew Coleman was responsible for the coverage, but he got caught inside in traffic and arrived too late. The Jets blitzed, but there seemed to be hesitation.

Hill's other scoring pass was a 3-yarder to Johnson, who beat rookie Dwight Lowery - his first game as the slot corner in the nickel package. Hill took a seven-step drop, which should've allowed the pass rush to get there, but he was under no duress.

Mangini blamed most of the gaffes on a lack of communication. In addition, the Jets generated little pressure. They recorded two sacks, but Hill had plenty of time in the pocket, allowing Isaac Bruce (six catches for 70 yards) and Bryant Johnson (six for 49) to get open on long-developing crossing routes.

"We didn't get enough pressure, period," nose tackle Kris Jenkins said.

"He was hot," defensive end Shaun Ellis said of Hill. "He kept finding the right guys and he kept slipping away."

Alarming trends have developed over the last two games. The Jets anticipated pass-heavy attacks from the Broncos and 49ers, yet they seemed powerless. Their pass-defense ranking had plummeted to 30th, and that may drop further after Sunday's game.

"Honestly, I just think that we're not playing good," said Jenkins, who was flagged for two penalties.

The Jets have allowed 292 points. They're on a 359-point pace, which would be their highest since 1996 - the year they went 1-15. The pressure is mounting on defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, who probably will be hearing a lot

When you do screens like the Patriots, Broncos, and 49ers did, the Jets D turns into TRASH! They couldn't stop a cheerleader from moving the ball against our GARBAGE DEFENSE!

Watch, I bet JP Loserman throws for 300 yards and 3 TDs, as the Bills beat us 30-10, this is how PATHETIC the Jets have been the last 2 weeks.:mad:
