I just read an article where Nick Mangold said that he has been suffering from chronic kidney disease. He is now in desperate need of a kidney transplant and none of his family members are compatible. This just breaks my heart. First of all, he's too young. Secondly, such a great player and such a funny guy.
This is why it's important to be a organ donor, he'll if any my organs can save somebody, how great would that be, prayer for Nick
Godthat puts this whole game in perspective with a dose of real life challenges. My prayers are with him and his family.
Sanchez almost dies, Mangold might die, the 2025 Jets season is already dead...... And we haven't even gotten to Halloween yet
One of my closest friends, Andrea, died in April. She got almost 25 years of life from a double lung transplant and made it to 60, which is unheard of, but she was also an animal about compliance and made staying alive her full time job. Her donor died in a car accident. I can't impress it upon people enough to be organ donors on their driver's license. It's stupid to take it with you, what's the point? Being buried or cremated intact is about as much use to you as a bag of money. Another buddy of mine who was older and broken in body and very ill "without much to offer" still managed to find a way to make a difference. He donated his corneas. There is always something to give. Kidneys are hard to come by. People think hey, you have two, why is there such a paucity? It's supply, demand, how organs are matched and delivered, and many things that may disqualify you as a donor and vice versa. Many patients go into complete game over renal failure after being on the wait list for 10 years. You would think that your chances for a match for a kidney with a relative are exponentially better, but oddly enough with a kidney it does not improve your chances hardly at all. I know someone peripherally through Andrea who had a double lung transplant, a liver transplant, and a kidney transplant. We call him the Bionic Man. All of my stories are true. My friend's husband is waiting for a heart as we speak. It's not looking good. Organ donation is a federal network but the rules vary by state. I know a lot about it, especially since I was instrumental in laying the foundation for my POS brother-in-law to get a liver. Family. Sigh. Anyway, I'd be more than happy to field questions or give guidance to anyone in need. Good luck to Nick Mangold. He's going to need it. Edit: https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/register-become-organ-eye-or-tissue-donor Look up your own state. It's extremely easy to get that little heart on your license. If you're too lazy to put a formal Will together with a directive, a simple letter with two witnesses from the bank and a notary is all you need if you don't trust the people in your life to do what you want. Also tell no less than three people who mean something to you.
I don't think Woody Johnson has anything to do with the organ donor program. Or maybe he does? Like maybe he eats the hearts of disabled Argentinian babies to stay young, so he needs to cut to the head of the line.
I read his message and honestly, it feels like one of those two things can be true moments. On one hand, I have so much empathy for him. What he’s going through is terrifying, and you can feel the desperation in his words. But at the same time, it’s hard not to notice how unfair it is that visibility can end up determining who gets a second chance at life. His plea will probably work, and I don’t blame him for trying. Anyone in his position would do the same. But I can’t stop thinking about the thousands of people quietly waiting on transplant lists, without a platform or fanbase to speak for them. No one should have to rely on popularity to survive. I really do hope he gets his kidney. I just wish that everyone had the same fighting chance. May God bless Nick, and everyone out there still waiting and hoping for a miracle.
Maybe a campaign to help their former player by bringing visibility to this? Maybe call upon some of his cohorts who might have connections. Or yea, maybe we’ll just do a 30 second moment of silence for him posthumously.
thats exactly what this is. Did you read Mangold’s note? The New York Jets organization is sharing it out on every platform they own to bring visibility to his need for a donor
Fact: Renewed my license yesterday. Got a heart and a star added! The star required multiple documents; the heart required checking a box.
I absolutely feel for Nick and the Mangold family but you hit a home run with this post. Unfortunately, our current society puts celebrity above all. If you are fortunate to have it then good for you. MOST of these people are honest upstanding folks who are just doing what anyone of us would do. Sadly, this is example 1 in it's "it is what it is."
It is a nicely written post, but let's be honest: you can't have both. Which means answer this: do you want Nick to have the same fighting chance as others? Which means much higher probability of him dying, like everyone else in similar situation. Or do you want him (and others like him) to have a better chance because he may have inspired some people with his play, who might donate, which gives him a MUCH higher probability than everyone else (and actually does not even impact others). Which one is it - say honestly. Same near 0 chance like everyone else or MUCH better chance? There can only be one answer, not both. What say you?
