It's no surprise to many here that MetLife stadium is on the list. Of course the NFL agrees there is a problem but won't commit to fixing it https://www.yahoo.com/news/nflpa-calls-6-venues-improve-233031906.html .
'Tretter also called on the league to “clear the excess people and dangerous equipment from the sidelines.”' I thought this line was interesting, as I was watching NBA highlights yesterday, and it seems to me there's a lot more room between the basket support and the baseline this year. An extra two feet, maybe? I can't find anything online.
Players have been posting all over social media the last week or two about getting the NFL to switch all the fields to grass. Hopefully something comes from this
I was thinking the same thing. Owners originally went to turf as a cost saving measure and the players are still paying the price. I think the Cardinal Stadium is grass. Not sure about Allegiant in Vegas.
Funny you mention that. I remember when we beat them on their wet soggy grass field not long after their new stadium opened. Pats had a bye week the next week. Voila! They installed Field Turf within two weeks. Bill was not putting up with a loss to the Jets if the playing surface was a factor. If I remember that correctly, they changed their playing surface within a season. I didn't recall anyone else ever doing that before. Anyone else remember it this way?
Ya--there's too much sideline stuff out there imo--also, the thing with Davante Adams--limit personnel out there too.
NFL: "We care about player safety (*caugh, caugh*, too much money at stake when we can feed an entire third world country without a dent *caugh caugh*)! NFL: "We care about player safety (*caugh, caugh*, lies about TBI, covers up concussion damage and early onset dementia, too much money at stake when we can feed an entire third world country and not feel a dent, *caugh, caugh*)! NFL: 'We care about player safety (*caugh, caugh* Tua Tagavailoa, *caugh, caugh*, Tom Cheat gets a RTP the following week when someone breathed on him to show we mean business *caugh, caugh* after Tua is gonna be fckd in 15 years or less and won't know what his name is *caugh, caugh*, who cares, we ain't payin' *caugh, caugh*)!
What about this bit: “While slit film surfaces, one type of synthetic material, have two to three more injuries per year, most of them are ankle sprains — a low-burden injury — whereas slit film also sees a lower rate of fewer high-burden ACL injuries compared to other synthetic fields.” Are there actual stats available anywhere? We just had two players out for the year in Denver, and it is not on the list.
I’m sure there’s more factors than just the playing surface but it feels very obvious that players hurt the ligaments in their lower extremities a lot less when they play on grass. Even if it’s kept ultra low cut, I would think it limits the speed of players even by a fraction of a second, right? Another reason the NFL probably wanted turf. And you have virtually no maintenance.
It's not just the teams that want artificial turf in the stadiums, it's also the municipalities which own those stadiums. There are only 8-10 NFL games per year in any stadium, but there are also concerts, fairs, and other sporting events in those stadiums. That's a lot of wear and tear (and upkeep) for natural grass arenas.
Grass would be ideal, like in soccer stadiums. Softer surface, better for the knees too. In fact, MetLife WILL install grass for the world cup: https://www.lawnstarter.com/blog/sports-turf/us-world-cup-cities-natural-grass/ But PA is asking for a different type of turf, not even grass. Should not be a massive deal, if there is a real benefit.
I was at a concert at Wrigley during baseball season and they put a type of paneling over the field--I'd think that's common practice with grass field these days
Football isn't just grass anymore, well not at the big teams, it is a mix of grass and synthetic fibres about 95% to 5%
the nba changed this years ago after Paul George hit the support and compound fractured his leg in the Olympics
Grass, just like it will be at Metlife during World Cup. They have grass at Harrison where NY Soccer team plays too.
