http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7000274/nfl-threatens-fines-bans-faking-injuries Considering the Jets have been on both sides of this I think it is a relevant issue to discuss. We've certainly had teams fake injuries against us, and we have probably been guilty of it as well (the playoff game in New England comes to mind). I think it is stupid the way the league is handling this, how can you prove someone didnt have a cramp? Faking injuries is a problem, but how about this; instead of fines you re-work the rule that anyone who stops play with an injury on defense has to sit out the rest of the possession? That way you lose out on a player for longer then one play, so people will be less likely to fake injuries, or if you do fake one you have a significant hardship (player will miss multiple plays). This just seems like Goodell trying to play judge and jury as usual. Seriously, how can he be able to tell if something like a cramp is legit??
It's a hard issue because it's one of those things you can really know definitively because everyone handles pain differently, and how they react. So if the league decides to take a stance they either need to have hard proof..ie like this: Granted that's not "hard proof" but when someone blatantly says to just go down when they have the option to just run off the field seems sketchy. It's going to be a controversial system, because it's basically going to boil down to all circumstantial evidence. I don't think two Giants players going down with "cramps" at the same time during a no-huddle offense is a coincidence, though.
Great idea I fucking hate it when players fake injuries in football. That & when players flop for fouls in basketball are 2 of the most infuriating things to me in sports
How about those that actually do get hurt and are able to return after a quick 2 minute treatment? And you definitely don't watch soccer.
I have no problem with that. My beef is with players who are faking it and it's so obvious Players flopping in soccer is one of the reasons i hate that sport and don't watch it. But don't they give out cards in soccer for flopping though? I don't really remember because i haven't watched it in so long
How about if they have to stop play for an injured player, that player can't return for the entire series?
Either this or increase the number of time outs per half from 3 to 5 and every time a player goes down for an extended period of time the team is forced to use a time out. If there are no time outs then there is a 15 second run-off and the player must stay on the sidelines the remainder of the possession.
Don't want to turn this into soccer thread 364754859 , but alot of us non-USA fans do get turned right off soccer, for that reason. I hate it and have been at games and shouted at my team and other teams players to get up. Been ejected 3 times so far. Worth though IMO, bars are empty
good luck policing this one. anyone ever get a shot in the gut while playing a sport? depending on how hard you could be down for a few minutes... but more than likely a quick breather is all you need. same with a stinger. these two things happen frequently, and are legit. how do you tell if someone is legitimately feeling a stinger vs. someone pretending to bc their opponent is moving downfield on them?
:sigh: What the NFL is saying is bullshit like this Watch the video has no place in football. I'm 2000% sure he was ok, unless there was a sniper in row z.
How about a team has two options when play is stopped for injury A) Burning a timeout allows the player that went down to re-enter at anytime B) take the injury timeout where the player that went down cannot return for the rest of the series
How can you tell when someone is faking? Well you can't if they do it in a smart way. Anyone want to argue two giants players looking over at the sideline and falling to the ground like soccer players weren't faking an injury?
This could work, but you know all the teams would just have their crappiest player go down. Oh look, a major mismatch, fake an injury before the snap! Honestly, it needs to be looked at by RG on a case by case basis, fines shuld be levied on the coaching staff, team, and individual player. I think that might reduce how often it happens, but either way, they would be affective in what their goal was, have a little bit more time to adjust to the situation and get some substitutions in. I would love to see some team exploit the hell out of it ALL year long in a brazen manner. I think that would be hilarious. Imagine players dropping for no reason everytime something does not quite look right. haha
:sigh: condescension aside, i did see the video. my point is still valid. i know what the nfl is saying. i never said i disagree with it. my point, is that its a slippery slope that other leagues haven't fared too well with either.
If this memo means I never see a player walk out of the huddle and fall over like he had been shot then it's been as successful as it needs to be. I agree that it could be a slippery slope if handled incorrectly.
The thing is, there are very very few (trying to think) times where feigning injury can give you any kind of advantage, the hurry / no huddle offense like has already been mentioned ..... are there any other times when faking can be used to advantage??? This is another reason why this sport is great.
