Great info so far.... Mayock is really talking up Tony Hunt. He siad he will be a second round jewel.... his only shortcoming is lack of breakaway speed, but he can accelerate through the hole, runs with power, isn't that easy to hit for a big back, can catch and pass block very well. Talked about how Stanton had a very spotty year after high expectations, has some things to prove.
I like Mayock.... probably because he alwys seems to like the same players I do! LOL. He hust finished talking up Carriker, said opposing coaches had admitted to him that they could not move Carriker at all. They just could not move him, very strong at the point of attack... just what the Jets could use in a 3-4 DE...6-6, 292.
No wonder Woodley has dropped latey... very unimpressive. gets knocked down pretty easilly in the one on one. This Beakman kid looks like a very good O line prospect. Carricker has better edge speed than I thought he did. Some of the O linemen look better than ecpected.
I was impressed with Anthony Spencer. I thought he had good size and speed. He shed some blocks, got by the LT. Woodley was eaten up by Levi Brown in the one on ones. The one guy who caught my eye was Brandon Mebane. He looked pretty good on the one on ones. He is 6-3 and is listed at 295. If he can gain 15 more lbs he can be a good NT. Adam Carriker is quick. Woodley did not look great on the one on ones but he was pretty effective on the live 7 on 7's.
Troy Smith unimpressive so far, already like 3 fumbled snap exchanges. He doesn't seem to have very good field vision from the pocket either. Having said that, these kids, especially the QB's have to be confused. They got the playbook only last night, and it's raining to boot. So far, Stanton looks to be the best of the North's QB's. Sorry to say Leonard hasn't looked good. he keeps going down on first contact. They said he lost about 15 pounds in two weeks to show he can run with the ball, but he hasn't looked powerful. Hunt dropped an easy pass. Levi Brown and Beekman are very impressive. Ramirez got beat on a spin move by Okoye, but he learns fast. Okoye tried it again, and Ramirez pancacked him. Ramirez is one VERY strong kid, and huge. Coming from that throw happy Tx Tech offense, he's not used to having a hand down, but still has made the adjustment nicely. Posluszny, Carricker, Brown, Beekman and Ramirez stood out to me.
TJ - WONDERFUL coverage. Love hearing it. Brings me back to training camp days. God I love the offseason. Kinda perverse, I know. Anything at all you pick up on the DL players, I'd love to hear it. Carriker and Okoye are two names that I'll be following myself.
The coverage could be better, vilmatic. They tend to get sidetracked with these sort of player highlight videos instead of covering what is happeneing on the practice field, with a split screen sort of thing. you see a kid make a great play, and Mayock and his sidekick are commenting on the highlight reels. They could do that crap in a studio show, ya know? Often, I see a player make a great play, and I can't tell what player it was.... they are too busy commenting on a spotlighted player. It's annoying, really. They spend too much time talking about Gruden's coaching style too, instead of the players. Often, the practice film footage which is live, is nothing more than a backdrop for them to talk over. Mayock puts up his rankings and rattles on about them.... they might spend 30% of the time actually commenting on the drills and what's happening on the field. But, this is nothing new, is it? Like Sunday night football, half of what the porducers are worried about is promoting their network, on air personalities and shows. What goes on on the filed is just a backdrop for selling whatever.
I only watched him play one game this past season and that was the Florida game. I did see him multiple times during the 2005 season. He was terribly unimpressive to me. He's sloppy with the ball and has poor pocket presence. He's also not big. Shaun King, anyone?
Woodly is the typical Michigan Lb, IE Victor Hobson. Decent bulk, good strength and technique, but lacks elite speed and athleticism. He may end up being a decent situation pass rusher/short yardage type LB, but I dont see him as the super star many others do. I really like Carriker, but fear he will not be there when we select, as I think he'll have some good workouts to raise his stock.
ThunderbirdJet, I know what you mean about the media coverage, it's terrible, but sad to say, I don't think people like us (I assume you also belong to this category), who would love to break down film of any and every player, are not a very powerful market segment. You may already know this, but I thought you might enjoy this tip regarding print media: having wasted millions of dollars on useless draft guides, I can say with a high degree of certainty that profootballweekly.com puts out the best one out there. Worth the money. Not as great as when joel Bushbaum was running the show, but still by far the best. Anyway, thought I'd share. Kurt, I thought Woodley was much more one-dimensional than Victor. Hobson surprised me this year with his intelligence, patience, and fundamentals. I haven't really seen that from Woodley. And what's worse, he ALSO does not show great athleticism. Really, comparing him to Hobson is unfair to Hobson, I think.
I'm a big Mayock fan. He is always on target and bRings up intelligent points and not the same old crap you hear every day. If you remember from last year he was all over Leon Washington at the combine.
