I always wondered: When a highly touted player gets drafted early in the draft, and turns out to be a bust, how come it's always the player who gets criticized, and not the so-called experts (Mel Kiper, Chris Simms) who said the player would be the next mega-star in the league?
The analysts who rank the players aren't going to criticize themselves. It would just question their knowledge and probably deter people from wanting to listen to their mocks the following year. I'm not sure if you are a big twitter person, but there are so many people on that platform who are better than Kiper-- he just happens to have the loudest platform so he is the ones we hear about most.
There are two types of Mock Drafts 1. Where they think a player should go 2. Where they think a player will go based on inside info
Kiper is straight trash and any football fan knows this. Who are some highly touted prospects that come to mind? It’s Sam isn’t it
The answer to this is probably that the volume of busts exceeds the volume of stars. It's hard to pin a bust on an "expert" when the professionals get it wrong so often. Also, any professional who is taking input from any of the "experts" is not doing their job well either. The professional in theory has access to pro personnel and college scouting departments. They have access to a complete coaching staff if they have questions about an individual they want to ask. They may well have access to other paid professionals for specific purposes like sports psychology and criminal background checks. When you've been watching the media scouting process as long as I have it gradually dawns on you that the guys who prognosticate for the public for a living really don't know that much more than the average fan. That they herd together so often to make bad choices just reaffirms that reality.
