Here come the big names. The Bills, who entered Wednesday $2 million under the $92 million salary cap, made their second major cut of the offseason by releasing former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sam Adams. Adams, 32, has been in the NFL for 12 seasons and has been with the Bills since 2003. His release saves the Bills $3.5 million of cap room. He was scheduled to make $3.5 million this season in what was his last season with the Bills. He signed with Buffalo in 2003 and has been a starter most of his three seasons. New general manager Marv Levy said the defense struggled last season because of the team's inability to keep defensive tackle Pat Williams the year before. Now, the defense grows even weaker in the middle with the release of Adams.

Panthers release RB Davis, DT Buckner and KR Smart March 1, 2006 Panthers.com The Carolina Panthers have released running back Stephen Davis, defensive tackle Brentson Buckner, and kick returner Rod Smart, the team announced Wednesday. "Each of these men played an important role in the success we have enjoyed here," head coach John Fox said. "It is not easy saying good bye to them. They were productive players, and their contributions played a major role in our going to the Super Bowl in 2003 and returning to the NFC Championship game last season." Davis, 32, ranks as the Panthers all-time leader with 20 rushing touchdowns and stands second with 2,085 rushing yards and 522 rushing attempts. He played in 29 games with 27 starts after joining the team in 2003 when he established single-season records with 318 rushing attempts, 1,444 rushing yards and seven 100-yard rushing efforts. Before coming to Carolina, Davis rushed for 5,790 yards in seven seasons with Washington. "Stephen set a physical tone for us in 2003 that played an important part in our run to the Super Bowl," Fox said. "We were fortunate to have him. He is unselfish and a great person as well as teammate to have on your football team." Buckner, 34, came to Carolina as a free agent in 2001 and set a team record for games started at defensive tackle with 65. He compiled 226 tackles and 14.5 sacks in five years with the Panthers. Prior to playing with Carolina, Buckner also played with the Steelers, Bengals and 49ers. "Brentson was here when we arrived in 2002 and was an outstanding leader as well as player for us," Fox said. "He set a great example for our younger players in his preparation and will be missed." Smart, 29, had been the Panthers primary kickoff returner the past three years before Jamal Robertson took over late last season. He also was a primary member of the coverage units, leading the team in special teams tackles in 2002 with 24. "Rod helped us in both our return and coverage games," Fox said. "He is a hard-nosed guy, who served as one of the special teams leaders and played a big role in that unit's success over the years."
