that was cool watching a damn good team in the making. whatever happend to glenn foley? we could have used in '99
Jets - Bengals 2004 on now. 3rd jets game being shown in 2 days now (they did jets-giants 03 yesteday).
That was a fun game to watch, until the last play. I remember being so pumped for that season. Foley looked so good that day, too, funny to think Vinny was just there on the bench waiting to come in.
Yeah, that last play sucked. It was such a high the play before when the punt went out of bounds inside the 5.
And for some reason Parcells cut that punter after that game. I never got that, his last kick pinned the opponent back inside the 5 in OT.
I like watching these games, even if the Jets lose (trust me, I was treating it as if it was a Live game). Primarily, because it helps me figure out Jets history. I know that game didn't have a lot of implications, since it was the 1st game of the season and we ended up winning the AFC East in the long run. I had never heard of Glenn Foley, but after I did some research on NFL.com, I found out he was our 7th Round Pick in the 1994 draft and finally earned being a starter at the beginning of the 1998 season. I don't actually know the events that lead to Foley winning the starting job. But what I do know, is that after Foley got hurt, Vinny T came in and started tearing it up. Can anyone tell me what led to Parcells to give Foley the nod over Vinny T? Did Vinny T suck in TC? Or was he not familiar with our offense?
Foley first got a shot in the horible 3-13 year in 1995 and looked good in the one game he played. Right as the clock was running out on the last play of the game, he suffered a shoulder injury and was out I think for the season. The following off season the Jets spent $25 million to bring in Neil O'Donnell as the starter, fresh off his appearance in the Super Bowl, Frank Reich was the backup who played when O'Donnell was hurt. I'm not sure if Foley was the #3 or was still recovering from his 1995 injury. By 1997 Parcells was here and still had O'Donnell with the big contract, but over the course of the year he got banged up and fell out of favor with Parcells. Somewhere in October Foley came in and again looked pretty good, but kept getting hurt, so O'Donnell came back in at the end of the season. O'Donnell and Parcells didn't get along, which came to a head in the 1997 finale, a game at Detroit with a playoff bid on the line. In two of the most important plays of the game Parcells had a RB, Leon Johnson, throw a pass and later Ray Lucas, who at the time was the Brad Smith of the team. O'Donnell was gone after that season and Vinny was signed as a veteran backup with the idea that Foley was ready to be the starter. There wasn't any QB competition in the 1998 camp, Foley was the annointed starter and Vinny brought in to be the backup. It was only when Foley hurt his ribs in 1998 that Vinny came in. The Jets started 0-2 with Foley, even though he played well in the SF game, then Vinny came in and they went 2-0. Foley came back in for a game at St. Louis and we lost again, a few days later Parcells snuck up behind Foley and grabbed him on the ribs right where he was injured. Foley doubled up in pain and that told Parcells what he needed to know, that he wasn't ready to play football and he put Vinny back in. We then went 10-1 with Vinny the rest of the way and Foley was gone after that year. He went to Seattle and never did anything.
Thanks for the explanation. Foley didn't look bad. He did have questionable throws that the 9ers could've picked off, and often overthrew receivers, at least in this particular game. Also, this game just made me remember Wayne Chrebet and how awesome he was. I think this was the year Wayne put over over 1000+ yds receiving.
I think he and Keyshawn both had 1,000 that year, but I'm not sure. That SF game was probably the best game Foley ever played.
I didn't see this game before prior to last night. I knew this game would come to an end on a Hearst run, since NFLN labeled it "Hearst's OT run". I just didn't know how long the run was going to be from. However, I sort of had the same reaction. I said to myself, "Don't tell me Hearst takes it all way from their 4-yd line...please don't tell me this is the way the game ends..." I would've thought maybe they put a drive together 'til about the 50 yd line and on a 4th and long/short, Hearst takes it to the house. Nope. 1st play from the 4. BOOM! Gone. You're right. This could only happen to the Jets. :shit:
I think Parcells "tested" his ribs going into either the Indy or Miami game. He named Vinny the starter after the Ram game going into the Monday Nighter at Foxboro. Isn't it amazing that we went 12-4 in 1998 and 3 of our losses came to the 6-10 Ravens, the 4-12 Rams and 3-13 Colts.
i saw most of the 4th qtr and turned it off at end of Reg. i remember the original all too well. a helluva game though.
If I'm not mistaken, either the Ravens or Colts game would have given us the home game vs Denver based on AFC records. Denver was 13-3. That sounds right about Foley, I do think he came back in after the rib thing but either got hurt again or just pulled. That MNF game at New England was my first ever road game in person, not counting the Giants.
Denver was 14-2 and one of their losses was to an NFC team so we would have had to have beaten Indy and Baltimore to get the 1 seed.
My bad, that was the year they started 13-0. Where was Foley in 1996? Was he the third QB or was he still getting over the injury from the year before? I remember it was his throwing shoulder, pretty sure it was from the 1995 home game vs New England. Parcells' team, ironically.
