Hey assholes, here's some opinion news for you, although, I do think the writers are crazy for thinking we agreed to the rule change just to keep Smith. • In 2010, Brad Smith had the best kickoff return average of anybody in the NFL with 25 or more returns, averaging 28.6 yards on 50 runbacks. Now, thanks to the league's recent rule change moving the kickoff spot from the 30-yard line to the 35, Smith's value on the free-agent market might have gone down. The Jets were one of 26 teams to vote for the rule change, and they might have done that with the idea of lowering the possible cost for the multidimensional Smith. Even without the threat of kickoffs, the veteran wide receiver still is likely to return to New York when free agency begins. http://www.profootballweekly.com/2011/03/27/new-rule-change-means-smith-likely-returning-to-je
That's an interesting thought, but I'd much rather have the field position we consistently had when returning the ball. Let's not forget that under Westhoff we've almost always had very good returners, no matter who filled in. I like Smith a lot, but I'm sure we'd fill the spot fine without him. Folk may actually be able to reach the end zone now too, so we have that going for us, which is nice.
This rule change is a kick in the nuts for us. What the hells the point of changing the rules so that we can keep Brad Smith having him in his new role of sitting in the endzone kneeling the ball.
Yeah, I'm suuuuure upper management decided to vote on a major rule change in hopes of keeping a mid-tier utilityman/speacial teams ace. What a clown! FYI, anyone who refers to the B-man as a WR has no freaking clue what they are talking about.
I was thinking Woody Johnson was not gonna be linked to "going against player safety" by not voting for the rule. Doing such would just make J&J look bad, they are in the health industry after all.
votes like this are always a give and take between owners.... woody may have voted in favor of the change just to keep in good with owners he needs to get some other change passed. or maybe he was out with strippers the night before and was so hung over he didn't give a crap or maybe he was raising his hand to ask to go to the potty and they called that a 'yes' vote. i'm going with this one.
Seems to me that the Jets benefitted from very good field position the past 10 years due to their good special teams so I don't know why they voted for the rule change other than getting Smith back on the cheap. I don't recall the Jets losing any players to injury during kickoffs? even Leon Washington was not injured during a kickoff return. I don't know why the Jets voted the way they did?
because he does a lot more for us than just kick returns ... he has an impact on every special teams unit and excels in the wildicat
He's nutso tho, remember that onside kick in the Patriots game when he picked up that ball and ran. fucking nuts.
Hopefully he comes back with a price that's not too hefty ... Granted Brad Smith was amazing out of the Mizzou-Cat or whatever ... but with Sanchez continuing to develop eventually we won't need Brad Smith out there taking snaps away from Sanchez Even though Brad Smith saved our asses on several occasions last season Plus like someone mentioned before we've always had solid kick returning no matter whose back there But I would love to see Brad back at the right price
So, they would lower his market value in order to pay market value for him, which would be a fair price anyway.........huh? The only way that makes sense is if the Jets somehow value him more than the rest of the league with the new rule relative to the old rule.
Rule change goes both ways. Jets haven't had a kicker with great leg, so the 5 yards will help us defensively as well. As for returning, Smith will still take it out and see if he can reach around 25 and break one every now and then. If it hurts our return game, it helps our kicking team. Not sure why people just assume we are on the losing end of it.
