The Jets elevated Alex Kessman off the practice squad and cut Ammendola. Kessman kicked for Pitt U. He was in training camp for the Chargers this past summer but I don’t think he’s kicked in an NFL game. Had a strong leg in college - pretty accurate from 50+…. The merry go round continues …
It's always amazing to me when an NFL team has trouble finding a good kicker or punter. There are 32 jobs of each type available in the NFL and they are not exactly rocket science. Every team should have a solid kicker/punter as a floor. That's because there are probably 100 of each out there at any given time and most of them are working other jobs than pro football. I'm not talking pro bowl caliber - just good enough to do the job. Unlike many other positions a guy who can punt the ball 45+ yards in the air with directional accuracy in college can do the same job in the pros. Same for a guy who can make a 40+ yard FG with some consistency.
college has wider goal posts which bumps college accuracy. also people who can kick really good will make a lot more playing soccer then in the NFL. There are probably a ton of soccer players out there who would be great in the NFL as a kicker but they get paid way more to play soccer
There are hundreds of college kickers available every few years. They don't have to deal with the physicality of football because with rare exceptions they aren't involved in a block or a tackle and even more rarely the subject of a block or tackle. For the most part the difficulty involved in their craft is similar to shooting free throws in basketball. It requires mental preparation, near perfect execution of form and very occasionally dealing with the unexpected. Really NFL teams should be able to find somebody who kicks well from the other positions on the team. Most NFL rosters have somebody who kicked in high school playing another position. In eras past many NFL kickers played another position and yet kicked very well when required to do so. It's an over-engineered specialty at this point. It's insane that in all of that you get teams who cannot find a kicker over a period of several seasons. The guys who play in tough conditions like the Steelers did before Heinz Field opened up should be judged based on what all kickers do going towards the bad end of the stadium. You do that and they balance out. But when you get a guy who cannot make kicks reliably in normal conditions, well that's a team failing because there are definitely guys available who can make those kicks and you shouldn't have wound up with the guy you did in that reality.

I wonder who it will be next week. They could make it a part of pregame introductions. “And this week’s guest star at kicker…” Maybe Flacco can kick. Would help further justify that draft pick we have up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Why not give Jim Turner a call? Look at it this way at worst they would of gotten the same production as today - no points
We can find plenty of kickers. We're great at that. We will find another one by next week, adding to the legacy
I think I'm going to die without the JETS ever recovering from Craig Hentrich. They kept Louie Aguiar...I remember this shit like it just happened. Talk about being scarred.
If comparable performance to today is all we’re looking for, I’d gladly show up and take a game check to shank two FGs and then get a front row seat to watch the rest of the game. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’ve been advocating for two years for the Jets to draft a kicker …. It’s ridiculous now beyond ridiculous. They didn’t want to pay Meyers … they release other guys and then sign practice squad rejects. Why not take a kicker in the sixth round? I see no harm in that …. a good kicker can win you 3 or 4 games a year. A bad kicker can lose you 3 or 4 games ….or change the trajectory like today.
