This is great news for the Jets. Clayton thinks the new cap may be 99 mill which means we just shaved 7 mill of our cap. I have heard it could even be higher than that. I guess we'll have to wait and see but either way this is great news..
I heard this as well. Really, no reason to assume it won't get done. I think Clayton said he thought it would be between 99-107, which is exactly where the Jets are right now. Once they restructure Pennington, and trade Abe, they'll be able to address the draft and FA's they need to fill holes.
This is great for the Jets in more ways than one. Not only does it help us with the cap but it also helps teams like Washington & Denver who would be interested in Abe.
This is not as great for the Jets as you think. (it's not bad) Yes, it helps them get under the cap right now but it does not make us huge players in FA. Why? EVERY TEAM gains 7M of cap room, even those who already had 10M. This means they can outbid us easily.
I hope we are never huge players in free agency. Build through the draft and add complimentary pieces in free agency. A good player here and there, but we don't need to go after the biggest names.
Gotta take what the defence gives you. We need all the help we can get. Getting a break never hurt anyone.
It helps the Jets more in that if there was no cba teams would have to give out front loaded contracts because there is no telling what future cap ramifications there would be. The Jets would be at a major disadvantage doing that. Now at least we know what the future holds and can therefore spread the money out rather than push the majority on this years cap.
The only position I really only want the Jets to address through FA agency is WR, and maybe add a little depth on defense. Otherwise go through the draft. This class is weak at WR and the WR corps. is a little thin with Chrebet retiring and Williams being released.
It means every team has to dump less players. If your a 4 & 12 team dumping players doesn't hurt nearly as much as a 12 & 4 team dumping players. We are rebuilding, dumping players is not the problem.
Yes, but not all owners and front offices are built the same. There are many who don't spend anything close to the current cap figure of 85M. You'e right in saying it probably won't make us a huge player in free agency, but this helps us alot more than many other teams. Especially since we're in rebuilding mode. Next year we could be major players. Also I've heard cap figures approaching 108M, reported by Mark Maske of the Washington Post this morning. That could be potentially excellent news for the immediate future of this franchise. Depending on Woody's willingness to pull the trigger on top flight free agents -- when called for, I'm not advocating Redskins-esque spending sprees of the past.
I wouldn't mind keeping Mawae around another year. Center's are tough to find and especially groom. But he's about the only guy I would be sad to see go.
Yes. The current CBA agreement expires at the start of the new leauge year. Which happens to be this Friday.
