Just thinking about doing this tomorrow. No real reason but one of my kids needs to work and everyone's schedule is tight so we are not doing anything for Fathers Day until next weekend, figured it would give me something to do in the morning. Basically just looking for opinions from any runners or anyone really as to if I might die of a heart attack, have my knees blow out, etc.. As the title says I don't run, at all, when I was working I used to walk over 5 miles a day but am now 50 years old, retired, had surgery March of last year to remove a vertebra in my neck and put in a couple of titanium plates, because of that the up and down might be rough on my neck but think I can handle that (I'll pop an extra morphine tab before the race), I am 6 ft 205 lbs so not really overweight but not in the best of shape, I eat pretty healthy just maybe once a month I hit a fast food joint. Not looking to win, just finish and figure that may push me to do more. Let me know what you think, doable or am I a dumbass?
I use to run track in hs and what I noticed is that it takes practice to go the distance. I have little experience though but I'm just guessing you shouldn't bother with a 5k. Sent from my LG-LS720 using Tapatalk
Do it. It's 3.6 miles, you should be able to wake up and run 3.6 miles. Take it VERY slow, and if you need to walk, walk. If it's cool and rainy, it'll be a snap. I've run 1/2 marathons. Those you have to train for. 3 plus miles is like a long fast hike. Do it. _
It will probably be a little warm but I have dealt with the heat here for the last 25 years. I will just have my big bottle of water with me.
Don't do it, man. Running untrained absolutely sucks and you're going to regret it within the first half mile when you're walking and out of breath. Running a 5k is fun but you'll want to be at least conditioned for it first. Google couch to 5k, there are a ton of great training programs out there and you'll get so much more enjoyment out of the race as a result.
hahahha 3.2 miles........its not long. the big problem is the heat...walk run walk run walk run and youll be fine. no one ever died doing a 5k...im overweight and ive done a half marathon each of the last 6 years.....that's about 21k.......the only thing I would warn about again would be the heat....if you start to feel sick or dizzy...stop immediately. start hydrating tonight and tape or band aid your nipples....even after a 5k, you can get the bloody nipples. And believe me my man, you DO NOT want that to happen. It happened to me two years ago doing a half and I could put a tee shirt on for a week. It felt like piranhas were breast feeding off me for a month straight
After my surgery I started walking as that was the only exercise I could do at the time and I got up to doing 6-7 miles, sometimes a would mix in some sprints after I got my cervical collar off, so not completely out of shape even though I stopped my walking a little while back. Just thinking of this as my impetus to get back in better shape.
I was actually thinking about you when I first posted this, I remembered you posting about your race. What causes the bloody nipples? Just friction from the shirt?
friction from that micro fibre shirt bro....its the worst thing ever...not likely to happen doing 5k but take no chances.......the adrenaline and crowd will get you through this and since I imagine youre not the fastest creature, walking wont really slow your time down too much. shoot for 40 minutes......a very good time would be 27-youll not come near that.....a great time would be under 24-not even if you turned black and lost 50 lbs over night would you do that. shoot for 40. youll come in at 45 with the fat chicks and the retards but youll feel good that you finished...then maybe train for another one in the fall. even though theres no fall in FL. good luck
Ya the first 1/4 mile and last 1/4 mile are all spectators cheering you on. The middle part really isn't that long and if you have to walk, walk. It's not like a Tri where if you stop swimming you drown _
Yeah, I was thinking oh shooting for 35 minutes but not really too worried, just need to finish. I was thinking about finding some 90 year old lady to pace myself with but don't want to hold her back. My only worry is my neck, wondering if it will take the stress, guess I'll find out. Thanks
