Myers: Jets looking like they are in no rush to find playing time for Tebow

    Poof.
The Jets have made Tebow disappear.
It’s six months since the blockbuster Tebow trade and two games into the season the Jets don’t know what to do with him.
Listening to Rex Ryan Wednesday, he makes it seem he’s got it all figured out. He insists the Jets have a master plan how to implement the TebowCat, but just like those clandestine practices over the summer, he’s keeping it a big secret.
“That’s the beauty of it because we control it,” he said. “The media is not going to drive it. The opponent, they are not going to have any idea of what we are going to do with him. I’m certainly not going to let them know, ‘Hey, by the way, Tebow is going to play 50 snaps this week.’”
Ryan, a defensive coach, and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano, an old school offensive line coach by trade, have not shown they have a grand plan. It is only two games, so there is plenty of time, but Tebow barely making it onto the field in Pittsburgh when Mark Sanchez was struggling runs opposite of what Tebow’s role is supposed to be: An unconventional look that can provide a spark.
Maybe Sparano, who was treated poorly by Dolphins owner Steve Ross before he was fired as head coach, will be motivated to be ultra-creative with Tebow in Miami on Sunday. Maybe Ryan will want to prove this wasn’t a waste of time.
So far, Tebow has served only two purposes: He put pressure on Sanchez for the first time in his career and he’s forced teams to prepare for the Wildcat, even if it’s just five minutes.
Tebow has taken 12 out of 114 snaps as the quarterback in two weeks. Why bother making such a big fuss about Tebow, why hold secret practices in training camp, if he gets only three snaps against the Steelers when Sanchez’s offense had shut down? If the Jets just wanted a backup quarterback, they could have signed Kyle Orton, who has a better arm and a lower profile. But they wanted Tebow.
Now they must deal with the weekly fallout about how he’s used. Ryan got defensive Monday when he was peppered with Tebow questions. He went on the offensive Wednesday, declaring nobody will tell him when and how to use Tebow.
Ryan admitted he will not tell the truth going into a game. Of course, he shouldn’t tell anybody his Tebow plans. It’s tough to keep information secure in this league. The Saints found that out. There’s no reason for Ryan to even hint about his weekly plans for Tebow.
“I’m never going to give you a legitimate answer,” he said. “I think I know the answer, but I’m not going to give it to you. It’s in our best interests that our opponents don’t know. Is it going to be a big feature? Is the Wildcat going to be really featured this week or is it more backburner? I think that plays into our advantage.”
The entire AFC East is 1-1, so the Tebow backlash has been mild. Still, if Ryan is antsy now with the Tebow questions, what’s going to happen if the Jets emerge from this stretch against the Dolphins, 49ers, Texans, Colts and Patriots and Dolphins no better than 3-5 going into their bye week and the momentum builds for him to start Tebow?
One thing they can count on: Tebow will not complain.
“I’m excited to do whatever they want me to do,” Tebow said Wednesday. “You have to know your role and where you are at and be smart about situations, and if you’re asked, you got to believe in yourself and just be ready for whenever you are called. The coaches believe in me and know what I can do and vice-versa. We have a plan and we’re trying to stick with it and try to win games.”
Even in the blowout victory over Buffalo in the opener, the Jets used Tebow at the wrong time, disrupting a long drive.
He took nine snaps that produced 19 yards. He ran the ball five times for 11 yards. He didn’t attempt a pass. Sanchez was on fire, and the Jets didn’t need a spark from Tebow.
Last week, the Jets were down 20-10 in the third quarter when Tebow lined up at quarterback for the first time. They had a first down at their own 27. Tebow ran for 22 yards. Joe McKnight ran for 12 and the Jets were quickly at the Steelers’ 39. But then Shonn Greene lost six yards, Ryan didn’t have faith Tebow could throw the ball and he put Sanchez back in. Tebow didn’t take another snap, and the Jets never crossed midfield again. In two games, Tebow has yet to attempt a pass.
A s long as the Jets made the investment in Tebow and then used valuable practice time to install the Wildcat, then they need to make it pay off.
So far, it doesn’t look like the Jets know what they want to do.

Not thread-worthy. Just a regurgitation of the quotes from today's pressers. Rex is going to be close to the vest -- there's never going to be a time when they say "we're using it a lot this game."

Myers is becoming such a hack. Rex and Sparano will use Tebow as much or as little as they want. They don't have to validate their acquisition of Tebow or answer to the media by playing Tebow more, they will use Tebow how they see fit.

His last statement is the absolute worst:
"As long as the Jets made the investment in Tebow and then used valuable practice time to install the Wildcat, then they need to make it pay off.
So far, it doesn’t look like the Jets know what they want to do."

Just because they practiced something doesn't mean they need to use it every week.. They practice two point conversions Gary, should they go for 2 every time?? How about fake punts, should they do that every time??

It's only been 2 games, a very small sample size, so of course we can't tell what the Jets WANT to do. We can't tell what the Patriots want to do with Welker, We can't tell what the Giants want to with their new rookie RB... Give me a break Myers.

Rex, and the staff talked up Tebow when they acquired him, but if anyone knows anything about Rex they know that he talks up everyone and it in no way means they will play alot.... and he certainly doesn't have to/never does play a player just because he talked good about them to the media.

OP, good snag on that article. It's consistant with my thinking and evidence that someone beside me thinks Rex is NOT doing ALL he can to get wins (breaking weak).

Maybe we should brain storm REALISTIC options (err, this is not an attempt to desparage the ways Tim has been used or the unrealistic suggestions by many of this board's commenters of ways for using Tim) for using Tim that would not be threatening to Mark or exacerbate the palpable fear of Tim being successful, and at the same time reinforces Rex's 'on the record' Tim rhetoric. A hard task to be sure, but IMO, doable. I will NOT give up on the Jets, Rex, Mark, or Tim.

Idk, maybe I'm confusing him with someone else but it doesn't seem like he used to be this bad. I don't know if its the culture of the industry right now or if this Tebow thing is really in his head but it seems like he's trying WAY to hard for attention. - I don't remember him being that bad.

    Easy job. :)

Some writers will explain why and so. But hindsight is 20/20. Happens in all sports.

I think we may see a bunch of Tebow @fullback snaps this week with Conner being injured.

Seeing the 4th quarter+ of Jets' and Giants' home games, for free, gets a not bad in my book, but I'm sure your job has equally entertaining perks, no?

"These guys" got your attention. On second thought, maybe you're correct. That's not worth much.

I refuse to read any article where the writer starts out by calling me a poof.
