Free Agents Matt Slauson G-About the best guard option out there as a free agent and was a top performer for the Bears last season. Don't know if he'd come back to the Jets but the Jets need O-Line help on the interior Badly. WR either Maclin or Sanders. of course both would be nice and should be affordable, but only calling one or the other. Thats it for the free agent calls. There will be roster fillers and such but for FA's only looking at impact starters for this. Draft. Only only 2 trades in the draft. A move down in the first for a 1st, 2nd and 4th. and a move down in the third for a 3rd, 4th, 6th. For compensatory picks I'm playing a little loose here, Craig Turner has a fairly good record of when he does miss it's only by a round for the most part, last year he get 24 picks right and missed 5 on rounds and 3 others totally..not a bad record. But since this is a "mock draft" I'm giving the Jets an end of the 4th for Landry, a 5th and 2 7ths. For the purists who don't like trades in mocks...to bad, at least I kept it reasonable For who might/could be available I used 3 scouting sites and used the average projected round for each prospect. This of course will change a lot over the next 2 months, especially after combines. With trades and comp picks the Jets have Round One 1 pick. Round two 2 picks Round three 2 picks Round four 4 picks (2 from trades 1 comp) Round five 2 picks (one comp) Round six 2 picks (one from trade) Round seven 3 picks (2 comp) The draft 1. Jace Amaro TE. IMHO the best receiving TE in the draft, not the athlete Ebron is but I think he has better hands, neither are known for their blocking. 2a. This is tough, it came down to a choice between Beckham, Cooks and Matthews. In the end because I had gone with fast and speedy in Free Agency I decided to go with big frame and sure hands in the draft (sure hands is a recurring theme here) So I went with the 6'3 Matthews. 2b. I wanted to push this pick to the 3rd round but I don't think he'll be there so for the 2nd year in a row the Jets grab a 2nd round QB in Zach Mettenberger. He has the size, the frame and the arm and it's a pick that follows the mantra of competition. 3a This one is iffy, he could go in the 2nd but the average is a third so going with Jeremiah Attaochu OLB. He has most of the traits I like in an OLB, a mean streak and a motor. 3b I really would like to push this one to the 4th, but the average is the 3rd (and I suspect after combine he'll move up to a low 2nd high 3rd, but for now) Donte Moncrief WR. Another big target at 6'2 226 with good hands but not elite speed, but an excellent route runner who uses moves to break free. 4a Ahmad Dixon. His stock has been falling on the sites and he currently averages out as a late 3 early 4. He's got a lot that I like an a SS 4b EJ Gaines CB. another player who I like who's stock has been falling of late. You'll notice a trend here with the CB's and safeties, I like guys who are aggressive and take shots for the ball. 4c Round 4 continues the trend of Defensive backs with FS Terrance Brookes, he's rising lately so may not be available at this point but for now he continues the trend of guys with ball skills. 4d Joe Bitonio OT. He will probably move to guard in the NFL 5a A triple dip in the WR field. The Jets are desperately thin here and more freshblood. Devin Street is the choice here, After the combine he may rank too high to be drafted here but currently he's averaging a 5th round on the 3 sites. He's a big target at 6'3 but only 195 and he's not fast but he has very good hands and stays very focused, he's not fast but does fight for the ball and for extra yards..a tough receiver. 5b RB De'Anthony Thomas-Fast, good hands but lacks a real positin due to being very undersized. 6a FS Marqueston Huff. another DB to add depth and special teams play. 6b Kirby Van Der Kamp P. the Jets need a punter and he averages out as a 6th round pick. 7a This is one I'm pretty sure will be gone by the 7th but to be honest this low in the draft I don't really have any favorites or players I know well and since at least on site has him as a 7th rounder Ill go with Andrew Jackson ILB. He'll likely be gone by the 6th but this low in the draft I'm grasping for names. 7b and 7c I'm leaving these last two picks blank, they're essentially UDFA being compensatory picks at the end of the draft. How I'd use them is take the highest rated players who fell from higher in the draft due to character issues or injury issues. Take a flyer on them, worst case scenario you cut them best case scenario you get a player like the Bengals Burfict. But at this point I have no idea who's likely to fall from grace, but every year 2 or 3 1st to 3rd round talents fall to UDFA.. What? It's a mock so I have to pick? Okay 7B Sean Parker Safety. 7C Dri Archer WR
Interesting. I disagree about Slauson being the best OG FA (if he was available). Asamoah, Schwartz and Beadles are all better. I'd really love for the Jets to get Asamoah, but doubt they will. I definitely want the Jets to get Maclin, and would also like Sanders as well. I don't see the Jets only signing 2 FAs who will have an impact. They have too much cap space, and to not use it would be foolish imo. "Roster fillers" are not worth spending FA $s on. They can find those among UDFAs if that's all they're looking for. Depending upon whom they'd miss out on by trading down, I'd be deliriously happy if these two trade downs happened and the Jets got those picks in return. For sure, however, my first pick would not be Jace Amaro. I'm not sure I'd even want him, and sure wouldn't use a 1st round pick on him. I'd rather have Fiedorowicz than Amaro. I'm certain of that. If I traded down, depending upon how low the Jets actually moved, whom was there, and how my board fell, I'd most likely go WR (Beckham, Cooks, Adams), OLB (Van Noy or Ford), or FS (Dix or Pryor if either was still there). I like Mettenberger a lot, but unless the Jets have really, really serious concerns about Geno, I would hope they don't take Mettenberger in the 2nd. If he was still there in the 3rd, I think I'd grab him, but quite possibly would hope that I could grab Garoppolo in the 3rd. I really like Attaochu a lot. I'd be very excited about this pick. I don't know that much about Moncrief yet, but based on what I do know, I could be happy with this pick. I really like your 4th round picks and lower. I'm not wild about Huff, but adding the Black Mamba and Dri Archer both would be amazing for adding speed, play-making ability, and excellent contributors on 3rd downs and STs. Overall very good job. I'm curious what 3 scouting services do you use?
that'll teach me to read up on who had signed already, I got lulled in to a slumber by the lack of NFL news that typically runs up to the owners meetings. My bad.
No, but remember 4 of those picks are comp picks..two trade downs in the draft is not unreasonable, especially with one of them being a 3rd round trade down...Not saying it will happen, but gaining 3 or 4 picks on trade two trade downs isn't especially unreasonable.
Good draft. Like the Amaro pick but not sure that all 3 WR's will still be there in Rd 2 with the Jets 2a pick. However it's a deep WR draft so they'll still get someone good at that spot. I don't believe in drafting punters but it's a 6th rounder so not as bad. Getting Archer and Mamba late would be steals. I don't think either lasts that long.
love the draft! Mpncrief, Matthews and Street would be killer and IMO we wouldn't need a big FA WR signing if we got all 3. not problem with Jace, because I know Ebron will be gone. Dixon, Thomas, Attaochu and Gaines are also all solid picks. nicely done.
