I am going to go position by position. I will do the offense now, and I will do the defense probably tomorrow. Tell me what you think about my mock offseason. QB: Sanchez is the Jets QB, whether you like it or not. The Jets are not giving up on him. I think Brunell will retire, and McElory will become the #2 QB. Either O'Connell is the #3 QB or someone else comes in as the #3 QB. I don't see the Jets drafting anyone or bringing in a veteran QB to backup Sanchez or even compete with him. If Rex, Tanny and Woody were content with having Brunell be the backup for Sanchez these past two years, then they clearly have no plans to ever bench him, since Brunell is 80 years old and can't play QB in this league anymore. RB: I think next year Greene becomes a feature back getting 20+ carries a game. Either LT will retire or he will find a new team. His contract is up and I don't see the Jets giving him a new contract. He has clearly regressed since his years in San Diego, and its time that McKnight and Powell are given an opportunity to prove if they can be a decent backup for Greene. They were drafted in consecutive 4th rounds for a reason, and thats to be a valuable backup to Greene. Lets give them an opportunity. FB: Nothing needs to be changed here. John Conner is the starter, and Baker seems like he will become the backup FB. WR: Santonio will remain with the Jets, and hopefully he will have a better year. I would also resign Plaxico. He will be 35 next year, and he won't be getting more than 1 or at the most 2 years from any team. His salary won't be going up from this year because teams don't pay you more money once you are in your mid 30's. I think a 1 year 3 million dollar deal or possibly 2 years for 6 million is worth it. Sanchez does not throw the ball down the field well, so he isn't going to catch 100 passes a season because he isn't a Wes Welker type receiver. He has dramatically improved our red zone offense and is still a huge threat in the red zone, so I think he needs to be retained. Kerley will be the Jets slot receiver. He has had a pretty good year, and hopefully he can have an even better year next year. Patrick Turner is a blocking WR, who is obviously only in the game to block. He won't develop into anything more, but I don't have a problem with keeping him as a #5 WR who blocks well. Eron Riley and Logan Payne both have good potential, and we will see what they can develop into. If they can develop into #2 WR's, then thats a plus, but if they amount to nothing, then they can be cut or placed on the practice squad. I think that the Jets need to draft some WR's in the 4th and 5th rounds as future replacements for Plax. I don't its necessary to draft a WR very early in the draft because many good WR's are not drafted in the first round. The Steelers have had a lot of success with drafting WR's in the middle to late rounds and having them turn out really well. Wallace was drafted in the 3rd round, and Antonio Brown was drafted in the 6th, so I definitely think the Jets should try to find some potential diamonds in the rough in the 4th and 5th rounds at WR. TE: Keller is obviously the #1. Mulligan needs to be cut and he will be cut. I think the Jets should draft a blocking TE in the 7th round. There is no need to go out and spend money on a veteran blocking TE or one early in the draft when you can find a capable blocking TE late in the draft. One intriguing player that not many people know about is Jeff Cumberland. He is currently on IR, but he runs a 4.45 as a TE, so he is a guy that could really be a matchup nightmare in the future, and he could be a valuable pass catching TE. He was a great find by the Jets. Baker seems like he could be a decent #3 TE, and the Jets have 2 TE's on the practice squad, so maybe one of them amounts to something. LT: Brick is the starter here, and he has been pretty solid this year. It hasn't been his best year, but he has been pretty good. I don't know much about Austin Howard, but he is 6'7 330 and he started a game last year for the Eagles, so he can't be horrible, but he could be a valuable backup. I don't think Vlad is a tackle, but maybe he will prove me wrong, and become a decent backup to Brick and whoever is the starter at RT next year. I think the Jets should sign a decent veteran who can provide some depth at LT or possibly start at RT. LG: I know this is a bold prediction, but I think the Jets should draft David DeCastro next year. If the Jets win, but don't make the playoffs, they will draft somewhere from around 15-20. If they lose to the Dolphins, the Jets can draft anywhere from 12-20. I think that if they lose, they will definitely be in position to draft DeCastro. If they win, but don't make the playoffs they might be able to draft DeCastro, but if he is already off the board, then a guy like Barrett Jones wouldn't be a bad idea. If the Jets happen to make a long run in the playoffs, they can still probably draft Barrett Jones and he is a very versatile player who can play Guard or Tackle, but he would make a good Guard in my opinion. I don't know much about Caleb Schlauderaff, but he wouldn't be on the active roster if he was horrible, so who knows, maybe he can be a decent backup Guard. I think Vlad could be a decent backup Guard as well, possibly even a starter some day, but lets see how he develops. Vlad should not be abandoned because we wasted a second round pick on him. I would also resign Robert Turner. He can play both Guard and Center, and he was really a very good backup. He will cost next to nothing to resign, so I think the Jets should and will resign him. The Jets also have 2 other guards on the practice squad, and another guy on injured reserve, so who knows about them, maybe one of them turns into a good player. C: Mangold is obviously the starter. I would bring back Turner, who could be the backup to Mangold. He would do a decent job, IMO. If the Jets decide not to bring back Turner, they should bring back a guy like Baxter who is somewhat familiar with the Jets. He was horrible in his starts with the Jets this year, but its not easy to throw an undrafted rookie into a starting role, so I bet he will improve. RG: I would move Slauson to RG, and cut Brandon Moore. Slauson played RG in college, so he probably is more comfortable with it. Moore is 31, and he isn't getting any better. He isn't horrible or anything, but he hasn't been good this year, and he has only 1 year left on his contract, so I wouldn't object to cutting him and saving 3 million for another need of the Jets. Just read what I wrote about LG, if you want to know about the backups. RT: Wayne Hunter should and will be cut. He is horrible, and you are saving 9.5 million over the next 3 years if you cut him. Its definitely the smart move to cut him. I would draft a RT in the second round of the draft. You can find a decent RT in the second round. LT's are usually found in the first round, while you can find RT's throughout the draft. Read what I said about backup LT's if you want to know about the backup RT's.
I'll start There is still no deep threat in your WRs. When we had Edwards, any play he could run a go route and catch a 60 yard pass and teams had to account for that, now they don't. This needs to be addressed Now TEs, alot of people know about Cumberland, he's no secret. other than that you make sense, but we won't be carrying 4 TEs on the active roster. Keller is the 1 and Cumberland will be a backup, that leaves you room for a blocking TE, so if you want to keep Baker why would you draft one and of course, the second I see the most problems with, your OLine plan On a team with depth as a problem and multiple needs, why cut a starter? Moore was great last year and is only 31, you don't cut this type of player to make your average LG "more comfortable" if we are going to draft a 1st round OL, then it will either need to be a tackle or someone will have to go to RT
If you good with bringing Plax back, you are asking for a repeat of this years offense. Good riddance to Plax.
