I've seen a bunch of these popping up here, and I figured I'd try my hand. 1st Round: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU. At 6'5, and 290, Jackson is an ideal 3-4 defensive end, at that's one position that we're lacking depth at. Kenyon Coleman has been very average, Shaun Ellis is getting old, and the only other guys we have are backups at best, like Mike DeVito or CJ Mosely. Jackson will usually take up two blockers, freeing up lanes for our edge rushers, and will be able to help Jenkins stuff the run. Would have an immediate impact as a rookie. Alternate selection: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois: A very physical corner with good ball skills 2nd Round: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers. Britt's size and physicality can't be questioned, and at 6'5, 220 he's the big receiver that we don't have. But he's also fast, and should run the 40 around the 4.5 mark. He's explosive, gets good separation and does a great job going up and making the catch. He's got solid hands and won't drop too many balls. Lastly, he's been very productive at Rutgers and won't have a difficult time making the adjustment to the NFL. Alternate selection: Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State: An absolute home run threat every time he touches the ball, also can line up in the backfield or at QB 3rd Round: Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa. Greene is a big, bruising back, at 5'11, 235 pounds, and is a load to take down. He was among the most productive players at any position in the NCAA this past year, with over 100 yards in every game and 17 touchdowns on the year. At the very worst, he's a short yardage back for a year or two before taking over as the big back next to Leon Washington after Thomas Jones starts to slow down. Alternate selection: Mike Mickens, CB, Cincinnati: A little undersized, at under 6 feet and 180 pounds, Mickens is an ballhawk with good man cover skills 4th Round: Keenan Lewis, CB, Oregon State. If the Jets haven't picked up a corner yet in the draft, Lewis would be a nice get in the 4th. He was a four-year starter for the Beavers, and got better every year. This year, he finished with 4 interceptions and 9 passes defensed. He's not the fastest corner, but is very physical and might be best in a zone scheme. However, he's a great leader, a three-time All Pac-10 Academic selection, and has other intangibles that improve his draft stock. Alternate selection: Graham Harrell, QB, Texas Tech: I know people will call him a system QB, and he obviously benefited from having Crabtree at WR. However, he has an NFL arm, and his production can't be ignored. 5th Round: Jonathan Casillas, LB, Wisconsin. Casillas has always been a bit smallish for a linebacker, at around 6'2, 230. I've seen him as high as the 2nd round in some mocks and as low as the 6th in others, and if he could be had in the 5th, I think he'd be a steal. He could play either inside or outside, but has top-end speed for an LB. He's the kind of player that you could put on a running back or tight end and not have to worry about a safety coming over the top. Not a great run stuffer, but that's what David Harris is for. Alternate selection: Bear Pascoe, TE, Fresno State: An absolute mauler of a blocker, has also put up some impressive numbers receiving. Would fit in perfectly with Ryan's physical style of play. 6th Round: Gerald Cadogan, OT, Penn State. Cadogan has been a very productive player at Penn State, anchoring a very good offensive line for the past three seasons. Definitely a better run blocker than pass blocker, I imagine he'd have to shift to the right tackle spot in the NFL. However, he's a very smart player and a leader who would have no trouble filling in wherever he's needed along the offensive line. The Jets seem set along the offensive line, but you know what they say: you can never have too much depth. Alternate selection: Antonio Dixon, NT, Miami: Dixon is immense, at 6'3, and about 330. He's struggled to stay healthy, and with productivity, but has a ton of potential if just for his size. 7th Round: Darcel McBath, S, Texas Tech. McBath is small for a safety, at just 6'2, 200 pounds. However, he has great ball skills, as proven by his 6 interceptions and 7 break-ups this season, which led to his selection as an all Big XII first teamer at safety. He has good speed and would play a solid center field, letting Kerry Rhodes roam and blitz. Basically, he's the anti-Abram Elam. Alternate selection: Aaron Perez, P, UCLA: What is there to say about a punter? How about an average of 45+ yards a punt? Perez would be the kind of guy you can put back there for years and not worry.
1st round: I really dont know Jackson, he is great against the run but our run defense was already very good last year. I would prefer a DB, that being said I love Vonte Davis at that spot 2nd round: Britt is a good choice 3rd round: I like the Greene pick, but if we dont go corner in the first two rounds I like Mickens as an alternative 4th: Ok with CB, I hear harrell is having an absolutely horrible week at the senior bowl and his arm strength is not impressive 5th: if Casillas is good in coverage then I would take him as like a situational linebacker 6th: I think you have to address the NT position in this draft, we need someone who can command a double team and do a little with it (as opposed to Jenkins who draws a double team and can do alot with it) 7th: I like the pick. however if Quinn Johnson is available here (which I doubt) I would love to take him
I think the positions we absolutely need to address are LB, S, CB, and WR; and we could stand upgrades at DE, NT, and RB, in no particular order. I try to address them, but I also want a best player available philosophy. I think Vontae Davis will be gone by #17, and I wouldn't dip down to DJ Moore in the first round.
I agree with the needs... LB, S, CB, WR AND DE. I think we should sign Leonhard in free agency to reduce the main needs to LB, CB, WR and DE. If Tyson Jackson falls to us i'd get him for sure. This way I can also cut Coleman which takes up a lot of Cap Space. Otherwise i'd go for CB or a LB in the first round (i think V. Davis will fall to 17 and if he doesn't some decent ILB will). In the second (assuming i don't take T. Jackson which i think is a reach at 17) i'd go for a CB or ILB according to which need i haven't filled in the 1st round. In the third there will still be some good WR while in the 4th i'd sign a DE or a NT. get a big strong RB by trading up to the 4th giving away 5 & 6 (or 7, depends) and with the final pick draft a punter since the one we have sucks big time. This is my draft
Ps if we don't get Leonhard sign Nic Harris somewhere in the draft (3rd or 4th). BUt guys let's not forget we will sign someone in Free agency so hopefully we won't have to fill all our gaps with the draft.
Great job. Only criticism is that if Britt runs under a 4.45(he will), he will be gone by our pick. Mocks are hard to do this early on.
Just gonna go by pick: 1) Don't like Jackson. Vontae or Clint Sintim would be a good pick here. 2) I don't really have a problem with Britt, he might not be there. 3) Greene won't be there. He's a 2nd rounder, possibly a little earlier with a good combine. 4) Solid pick here, although the best option for us in the 4th would be Mitch King. He's a Rex Ryan type of guy. 5) Fine pick here, as long as he has some speed. 6) I agree with the guy who said we should get some NT depth. 7) I'd like to pick up a punter in the 7th. Hodges is ok, but we need a good punter.
I've been basing mine off other mocks and predictions. FFToolbox has him right around the 17th pick of the second round in most of theirs:
Here"s my mock so far. It's unworthy of its own thread...so far. I don't have enough info. 1) Tyson Jackson- A true 3-4 DE, something Mangini never got. Will make Jenkins even scarier. 2)Clay Matthews- Ryan said he is looking for the football version of Pete Rose. This is him. If we don't sign a free agent, put him at ILB right next to Harris and lookout. 3)Brian Robiskie- WR Ohio St. - I love this kid. He isn't a speed demon , but wil fight for the ball and has good hands. His numbers were down because of the Pryor experiment this year. Reminds me of Cotchery. 4)Rashad Jennings- He might be gone, but this is an excellent RB class. Power game. 5) Domonnique Johnson-s/cb- Great size and speed and cover ability. I like him as a corner. 6,7 OL Depth This is all subject to change after Fa signings and the combine.
you realize any OL named "cadogan" on a jets mock is going to draw heavy criticism from the veterans around here..... jil
i'm no draftnik but i think we need to use the first pick to get the best big WR or the baddest pass rusher we can. except for the rarest of QBs, talent at these two positions change the opponent's gameplan. if you can get the best available at either, you have made the most of the first pick. i'm sure this was the thinking last year at #6. i lean to the WR as maybe Rex and his CS can coach up VG at OLB and young Lowery at CB and put in a better D scheme. we cant solve QB in this draft, and RB and OL are ok enough so lets get the WR. if Britt grades out (and moves up the board in the combine) and is near us even in R1 we should move to get him.
I want Robiskie as well great hands, runs great routes, run blocks good & is 6'3 something we need a tall WR. Some mocks have him in the 4th round if we could get a Saftey, Corner & a MLB in rounds 1, 2 & 3 then him it would be a steal.
