I haven't really followed college in a few year's, but I like to pretend. I feel the team needs are as follows: 1. DT 2. DE 3. OLB 4. S 5. Depth I believe that we will be somewhat active in Free agency as we have been in past years, and will sign depth through that. #30 - Trade Down - I pretty much feel this way every year, but this year is almost a must. Due to the low pick of Ghost, and Sanchez, and our pricey aquisitions the past couple years the Front Office is kinda strapped. Especially, if we want to sign the players we have now. The Jets trade #30 for Denver's pick #36, and a 2011 2nd/3rd Rd pick. #36 - Trade Down - There is still 7-8 players available that are high on the board, and we trade with Houston so they can get the Safety they need in Rahim Moore or Quentin Carter. Jets trade #36 & # 157(5th) for Houston's #42 and #104 (4th) #42 - Marvin Austin - 1st Round Talent whos stock dropped due to off the field issues. He will be our DE of the future. He will need to learn to extend his arms. Rex will fix that. #94 - DT - Kenrick Ellis - Hampton - Huge Freak whos stock dropped due to off the field issues. The plug that can push a double team back, and disrupt the play in the backfield. Tanny will give him financial incentive like Jenkins. #104 - OLB - Chris Carter - Fresno State - The only downside I pick up from this kid, is he doesn't attack the play, he lets it get to him. Rex will fix that. If anything else, he can cover. #125 - FS - Chris Culliver - South Carolina - I don't know he just remindes me of Kerry Rhodes that likes to hit. #190 - TE - Charlie Gantt - Michigan State - Known as a blocking TE, from what I see in the combine is that he is a technically sound reciever. #223 - WR - Dane Schanzenbacher - Ohio State - He had a red arrow up on NFL DRAFT SCOUTS site. His numbers look great, and maybe a slot nighmare. I used draft positions from a website that set showed some projections, and based my selection on that for when I drafted them. Not dreamy, but fills all of our needs, and will be relatively cheap. Alot of athleticism, but will need some really aggressive coaching. Who better than Rex. Please provide feedback.
chances are a few of your guys, particularly Sands and Sanzenbacher will be long gone. I think Sands is borderline 2 and likely a 3rd round guy, I keep seeing Dane as more of a 5/6th round guy and many of our gurus on the site love him as a slot guy. From a positional standpoint you did well, and its a pretty good first attempt. But you probably want to change the Denver pick we are getting to a 2012, since I believe its 36 and a pick next year. Otherwise, not a bad job, good attempt
I do like the Gantt selection, he is exactly what the Jets needs opposite Keller. A large in line blocker with great hands who can be targeted in the redzone. With the release of Hartsock, this pick is very much plausible. It's still needs a bit of polish, but your attempt was certainly not in vain...
Not bad for a first attempt, Id say though that your choice of Jets biggest needs and its order isnt really correct. We need a pass rush BAD, for the future of this team. We have OKAY Dline depth but dont really need to address it as early as round 1 unless someone like Watt or Liuget fell to us. But thats really it. Id say the order would be or should be. 1.OLB 2.DE 3. S 4.DT 5.Depth Dont forget about Pouha , he's one of are most underrated players and gets the job DONE. Your trade backs are actually not that bad, im not sure we'd trade back twice but if so we need to pick a guy like Sheard or Brooks Reed for that OLB position. Then after in the third a guy Ellis could be there. Sands will be picked in the 2nd or early 3rd just because of his college career and his length, although not having the best combine. Maybe a guy like, Dejon Gomes or Brian Lainhart could be there and available to pick. I like the Gant pick alot, hes a great blocker and has decent hands. Like Magilla said he's a great compliment to Keller and can help improve the offense.
Thanks all for the feedback. Normally I would agree with the fact that we need a pass rusher first and for most. However, There is a noticeable difference when Big Jenks was not in the lineup. The DL sets up the pass rush, the pass rush sets up the secondary. Show with that said, I feel that DT is our biggest need. Pouha, has been very good for this team, but just doesn't have the power, or technique to warrant a double team, and can't push the pile when he is. Ellis is getting old, and is only going to decline (even though he is my favorite player). I think we will be ok with a solid DL, and westerman in the lineup. We will have Pace, Thomas, and Westerman as our OLB. That is pretty solid, and I am sure we will pick up a pass rush specialist in free agency. I don't think there is huge fall off from the available DT from the our draft position at #30 through the end of the 3rd. I did look hard at Brooks Read, and trully love his motor, but if the projections of Carter falling as I drafted him off, I don't see much more upside. (coaching up aside) I agree with Sands, but since the projection of him being 4th/5th rd pick totally changed my draft philosophy. I am not a huge fan of Moore, but the kid from OKIE I really like. Again, thanks for the feedback. I am not argueing your opinion, as I see alot of validity to your thoughts. As the offseason progresses, my draft positions will have to change.
Switch Sands and Ellis. Ellis Gas too many red flags to go top 100. I don't see him being an early 3rd day pick.
