Mr. Moore goes to Harvard

Whether you’re an NFL wannabe or an established veteran in the league, you should never stop chasing a dream.

A week ago, while the 300-plus prospects invited to the scouting combine were making their final preparations for the annual event in Indianapolis, Jets RG Brandon Moore was attending a business workshop at Harvard, preparing for life after football.

Moore was one of 77 players who participated in the NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial program at either the Harvard or Wharton business schools. It amounted to five, 10-hour days in the classroom, covering everything from how to read a business plan to evaluating investment opportunities.

Moore has a passion for food and he’d like to get into the restaurant business one day. Even though he still intends to play a few more years, Moore, who turns 30 in June, took the initiative, trying to get a head start on his second career.

“Now that I’m in the NFL and comfortable with my position on a team, I felt it was time to open some doors for my transition after football,” Moore said in a phone interview.

Here’s somebody who gets it. Instead of sitting back and taking it one day at a time, as football players are taught to do from September to December, Moore is looking toward tomorrow.

Moore would be an ideal poster boy for the scores of former college players at the combine. He was undrafted, changed positions (from D-line to O-line) and worked his way up from practice-squad player to a very good starter.

“I think the biggest thing you take from (the Harvard program) is that, as football players, you tend to lose sight of the outside world and how things work and you need a reality check,” Moore said. “Our life revolves around Xs and Os, lifting weights and watching film. You need to stay in touch with the real world.”

Naturally, there was some football talk at Harvard. Moore was stunned by the number of opposing players who came up to him and offered compliments on the Jets’ offensive line, which built a big reputation last season.

Moore bumped into a Colts player - DB Jamie Silva -- and fired off a little jab.

“I hope you know how lucky you are to have Peyton Manning,” Moore said he told Silva, who nodded his head.

It has been a month since the Jets’ loss to the Colts in the AFC Championship Game, and it still isn’t sitting well with Moore. He couldn’t bring himself to watch the Super Bowl. He was on a vacation in Mexico at the time. He went for a swim, took a nap and woke up in the fourth quarter.

But, in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, Moore saw the player interviews on TV, reminding him how close he came to being one of those players.

“It was really painful. It left a sick feeling in my stomach,” Moore said. “But it’s a new season now and that will be a big motivational tool.”

Nice to see a player who keeps himself grounded,the NFL needs to do more of this.

Between Moore and Ellis, I cannot think of another solid contributor who has been more maligned during his tenure.

Pretty much yeah. Ellis more so than Moore......... Neither here nor there.

Good for Moore. I am sure he gets 10 atrociously shitty business deals a day, a veritable minefield.

its great to hear stories like this! its a shame that only 77 out of god knows how many players actually participated in this.

it appears to be a good program and i am sure will help now and in the future for these guys who participated!
