The Star-Ledger this morning pointed out that Jones' license was apparently suspended on the spot, for refusing to submit to a blood-alcohol test. He supposedly measured an alcohol content of .22 at the scene, which was probably a breathalizer test he took at approximately 4:30 AM on Saturday morning. This would put you in the category of VERY drunk, not just a little tipsy. This is a guy who must have been punding down hard stuff all night long (the day before a game, no less). He was allegedly pulled over after driving very slowly and weaving, only several miles from the Jets training facility at Hofstra.

Take care Adrian. You had a shot with this team and blew it, no pun intended.

Presumably this happened shortly after he was informed that he'd be inactive the next day. No other reason for a player to get so drunk before a game. Still unacceptable, btw.

    In The Times:

Mangini Has to Deal With First Off-Field Problem

    y DAVID PICKER

    Published: November 30, 2006

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Nov. 29 — When Eric Mangini became the Jets’ coach last January, he installed a stringent set of rules to govern his players’ behavior. Through 10 games this season, there were no serious infractions.

But last Saturday the backup offensive lineman Adrian Jones was arrested near the Jets’ practice facility in Hempstead at 4:45 a.m. and was charged with driving while intoxicated. Suddenly, Mangini was forced to handle his first problem off the field.

Mangini spoke publicly about the incident Wednesday, saying that any additional disciplinary action against Jones would not be revealed.

Asked if he were surprised by Jones’s arrest, Mangini said: “I think it’s extremely important for everybody to make good decisions. I can’t stress enough how important it is, organizationally for us, that personal conduct is a huge priority for everybody — the players, the coaches, the organization. And it’s something we believe in.

“If you make a mistake, there are consequences for your mistake. And the important thing is to learn from it, understand it, not let it happen again, and everybody else learn from it as well, and accept the consequences for your actions.”

Mangini did not say whether the 25-year-old Jones would be on the active roster Sunday at Green Bay. He has played in eight games this season, but had not started.

Ron Colangelo, the Jets’ vice president for public relations, said Jones was fined because he missed a team activity Saturday afternoon. Mangini said that Jones was not active against the Texans because of a coaching decision “not due to injury or skill.”

Jones, who apologized to his teammates Tuesday, patiently answered reporters’ questions Wednesday in front of his locker. He said he learned that he would be inactive against the Texans after his arrest.

“Right now I’m just going to deal with the consequences and try my best to move on,” said the soft-spoken Jones, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2004 draft. “Anything like this is hard to deal with, you know what I’m saying? But I’m able to bounce back from it. Like, I’ve already made my peace with my team.”

Many of Jones’s teammates were reluctant to talk about his situation. When practice began, they seemed to treat him as they normally would.

Jones said he could not discuss details of the incident, and added that he did not have an alcohol problem.

It was just a stupid mistake,” he said. “It was a bad decision.”

According to The Associated Press, Jones’s license was suspended after he refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

The N.F.L. could fine Jones up to $20,000, but that would not be determined until after a judicial resolution has been reached. Jones will appear in court Dec. 15. Greg Aiello, the N.F.L.’s vice president of public relations, said that players’ fines were usually donated to charity.

“I definitely want people to see me as an example,” Jones said.
