Prior to draft day, teams in the NFL draw up their own draft boards. I've decided to make my own mock Jets draft board, i.e. a list of players to take in order of preference if they are still on the board, at least for Round 1. I also want to see other people's draft boards in this thread as well. Here are the Jets top needs for 2009 (IMHO): Offense WR - no brainer. OL (depth) - we have a good line as it is, but we are thin in the backup department, and I also wouldn't mind drafting an heir apparent for Faneca or Woody. RB - as we all know, TJ is getting a little long in the tooth, so if a good RB is available in the first few rounds (Moreno, Brown, McCoy, Greene, etc) we should pull the trigger. QB - could pick one up if the opportunity presents itself, otherwise I'm pretty happy with the winner of Clemens v. Ratliff. Next year's crop of QB's should be a lot stronger than this year's anyway. Defense DL (depth) - similar to our O-line, we have a good one as it is, but Ellis is getting older, Coleman could be upgraded, and Jenkins could use someone to rotate with. We're also a little thin on backups in the D-line as well, although Marques Douglas is showing some promise. CB - Sheppard might be out of here by this time next year, so I wouldn't be against getting his replacement at some point in the draft either S (depth) - I'm ok with Leonhard and Rhodes as the starters, and we have decent depth at this position, but I wouldn like to eventually get a replacement for Leonhard (who's good, but not great). LB - you can never have enough LB's in the 3-4. For draft purposes, I ranked our needs. I put WR after DL, becuase I think Clowney and Stuckey have good potential, and Smith might finally come into his own this year. I would really like to see the Jets find an acceptable DT to allow Jenkins time to catch his breath. I have QB ranked 5th, because again, I want to give Clemens/Ratliff a chance. DL, WR, RB, OL, QB, CB, S, LB Next, I took out the (near) consensus top 5 players off of the draft board. I think it's virtually impossible for any of these 5 to drop out of the top 10 or 12, so I didn't include them, and it made it a bit easier to do the board. Near-consensus Top 5 Matt Stafford, QB Jason Smith, OT Aaron Curry, LB Eugene Monroe, OT Mike Crabtree, WR Now that all of that is out of the way, here's my 2009 Jets Draft board, 6-17. I would say that it is a good mix of need and BPA. 6) Jeremy Maclin, WR - one of the most coveted non-QB's in the draft for Jets fans. We'd be ecstatic if he's still there at 17, but is highly unlikely at this point. 7) Mark Sanchez, QB - for me, it was a tossup between Maclin and Sanchez, and this is going to piss off a lot of fans, but Sanchez has a lot of question marks (1 year starting experience, non-endorsement from Pete Carrol). I still think he has a shot at being a good QB in this league. 8) B.J. Raji, DT - big NT, would definitely be able to give Jenkins a breather now and then, as well as a possible replacement for the future. Would also give Jenkins the flexibility to play on other parts of the line. 9) Knowshon Moreno, RB - he's a Jets fan, we have to draft him! Definitely a fan favorite, he's a complete back who's good at just about everything. Great compliment to Washington. 10) Tyson Jackson, DE - I know a lot of Jets fans aren't crazy about him, but it's starting to become slim pickenings at this point. He's a good DE who should project well as a run-stopping 3-4 DE. 11) Robert Ayers, DE - with the flexibility Ayers has to play almost every position in the front 7, I'm sure he has Rex Ryan's attention. He's not too shabby at rushing the passer either. 12) Jarron Gilbert, DT - another fan favorite. I still think he has better value in the 2nd round, but I wouldn't mind taking him at this point in the draft board. 13) Brandon Pettigrew, TE - not a huge need, but we could use a good blocking TE, and Pettigrew is a pretty good receiving threat as well. 14) Rey Maualuga, LB - if the rumors about Harris are true (Rex isn't that high on him, he's not recovering well from his injuries, etc), we could be looking at Maualuga at 17. I'm also definitely thinking about trading down at this point, if not a little sooner. 15) Percy Harvin, WR - not a huge fan of this pick, but he is an explosive player I think the Jets would definitely consider if Maclin and Crabtree were off the board. I would always take Harvin over Nicks and DHB. 16) Andre Smith, OT - OT isn't a huge need, but at this point, I wouldn't mind taking Smith. He has a few question marks and some bust potential, but could be groomed to play RT or guard, both of which are Jets needs. 17) Chris Wells, RB - this would be more of a BPA pick at this point, with everyone else above off of the board. Hopefully the Jets would have traded down at this point, but if it somehow came down to this, I wouldn't be too upset with it. What do you guys think? *ducks*
I think Maclin goes before Crabtree and Britt goes before Harvin. I think Pettigrew and Gilbert are too high. If it fell out this way though, and the jets were otc, I'd go DE for Maybin or Orakpo
I am hoping Rex moves Harris, I don't like him either, a pick to grab a player to work with Scott on the inside would be amazing, Harris is not athletic enough to be a player in Ryan's D
I don't see Ryan moving Harris he came in with such high praise of him and seemed really excited to work with him. I'm completely not against moving Harris if they can move up and grab Sanchez, but thats about it. I also don't like all this talk about the jets taking a RB at 17. Its not really a position of need and i feel like RB's in this draft are deep they can come back in the second round to grab one. Maybe even grab heywerd-bey in the second...I would be doing kart wheels.
As currently constituted our team is a Thomas Jones injury away from being in deep shit offensively. Leon is NOT an every down back. TJ is currently a training camp holdout. He will be 31 during the season. How is this not a need for a coach who wants to run an"all weather offense". Go look at some of the other all weather teams(Giants,Balt,Pitt etc.) And how many RB's went down.
Overall this might not be far off. Who knows exactly what FO is thinking. Personally, I'd put Raji to top of this list. He has the potential to be like a Ngata and would give our D line so much flexibility. I'd probably put Tyson Jackson ahead of Moreno, and i'd bump Andre Smith a little higher. If Sanchez is there, trade potential really comes into play.
If Maualuga is there at 17 take him!!! Then trade David Harris and what ever pick necessary to get Braylan Edwards. I know Mangini loves him so maybe we could steal Edwards.
