What the heck. I might as well give a mock draft a shot. I have us in the 12th slot. 1st Round - Jake Matthews T - Texas A&M 2nd Round - Aaron Murray QB - Georgia 3rd Round - Da'Rick Rogers WR - Tennessee Tech 4th Round - Sean Porter OLB - Texas A&M 5th Round - Omoregie Uzzi OG - Georgia Tech 6th Round - Demontre Hurst CB - Oklahoma 7th Round - Theo Riddick RB - Notre Dame Heavily offensive based. I love the middle of this draft which has MANY players that I would love to have drafted.
If we miss out on Jarvis Jones and Teo, then I want either Chance Warmack or Jake Matthews. All 4 of these guys are the only sure things I see in the upcoming draft - particular for our needs. I'd love to grab either of the latter 2 with a slight trade-down. And we are at the point where our 1st round pick develops into an All-Pro, - the sooner, the better. Not crazy about Aaron Murray at all - please no. I'm OK with the 3-5 round picks. I dont know much about Hurst and would be happy with Riddick in the 7th. Overall, - nice job.
I wouldn't draft a QB in the 2nd round... I don't like Sanchez but we have other needs. I would go OLB in round 2. Chase Thomas maybe? I'd also pass on Rogers.. when a guy gets kicked out of SEC school for failing drug tests that's an issue.
I can't see Sean Porter going in the 4th. love that pick, but he's a 2nd/3rd rd pick. I'm also a fan of Riddick. Matthews at 1 is the pick I also want.
I'm a big fan of Murray's. I know he's a tad short, but I think he commands his offense really well and has a cannon for an arm. I do believe we have to add a QB high in this draft. I imagine that Sanchez will be back next year but we need to plan for the fact that he might not be the future. If Murray doesn't work out then we pick another QB high in the 2014 draft. The rookie salary cap will allow us to take QB's high in consecutive drafts which we may need to do. I don't think you can pass on Rogers if he's available in the 3rd round. I think he could be a stud receiver.
For the most part I like the players you target. I have a sinking feeling lately that we will not have a draft like this, but I'd be happy with one. Murray's height does not scare me. The guy can play.
Any Jet's Mock Draft that has Jake Matthews in Rd 1 is fine with me. If the Jets DONOT sign a vet QB to challenge Sanchez in 2013, expect us to draft a QB in Rd 2 or 3. I understand this won't be popular, but it will have to be addressed. I like Murray, he's a winner, I understand Georgia has a great defense, but Murray can get it done. Some team will draft Murray in Rd 2 or 3 and get a good QB that in a short time could develop in to a solid starter. Rogers is a knuckle head at times, but he has all the skill/size to be a really good NFL receiver. Porter will probably go before Rd 4, he's a great player, I love his game.
Agree 100%. I will add 2 other players.....Terrance Williams and Gio Bernard. Both would have to be late teen picks if we go one a winning streak and lose out on the 4 players you mentioned. I'd rather trade down if Jones, Te'o, Warmack & Matthews are gone, but that maybe difficult to accomplish.
But I also wouldnt be surprised if they hold off and draft a QB in 2014. They might scramble with the 2013 draft to get o-line & RB mid-round (something in the 3rd like your favorite (and quickly becoming our favorite) Stepfan Taylor) to roll the dice on a rookie QB & hope for the same results as recent rookie QBs Dalton, Russell Wilson and even Tannehill.
Along with my previously mentioned Teo, Jarvis Jones, Warmack & Jake Matthews, I am very much still on the fence with Bjoern Werner of Florida State. Right now he's playing DE, but he is certainly projected to be a standup rush OLB in the 3-4. He's also putting up some hefty #s even after Brandon Jenkins went down for the season earlier this year. Granted, Tank Carridine has picked up the slack from Jenkins injury very well, but Werner is playing at a very high level. His future agent will probably tell him to pick up 10-15 lbs to get to a full time DE level in the 4-3 in order to capitalize on higher $$ pay as opposed to dropping 10 lbs in order to drop back in coverage when he plays the 3-4 OLB.
I love watching Murray throw the ball. He's got a great arm but his size scares me. At this point the Jets are going to have to follow the Seahawks method of keep looking for a QB until you find a good one. I understand they made a big financial committment to Sanchez but they never should have settled and stopped looking for another one. It's extremely rare at this point that a team without a top 10 QB can go deep in the playoffs. As much as the two AFC championship games were great, getting to a superbowl without an elite QB is becoming more and more difficult.
To everybody looking for a 2nd round QB: Kellen Clemens says hello. There is only one QB currently starting in the NFL who was taken after the 4th pick of the 2nd round and before the start of the 3rd. Chad Henne. NFL talent evaluators are too good as a group to let a good QB slip past pick 36 or so. It just almost never happens. Russell Wilson is a rookie who I predict will be a backup within a couple of years as the film rolls in on him. He has Doug Flutie disease and that always wears you down in the end. Matt Schaub sat behind Vick in Atlanta for 3 seasons before becoming a good (not great) QB in Houston.
That's a silly statement made by closing the window to an arbitrary partial round. If NFL talent evaluators were really that good there would be no starting QB's taken after the first 4 picks of the second round. 7 QB's currently starting were drafted after the 6th pick of the second round. Granted 2 of those starters are starting due to injuries to the primary QB (batch and Foles). And that's just who's started this year. heck Romo wasn't even drafted and Brady was what, a 6th rounder? While I will agree that most starters are taken prior to the early second round, part of that is also due to them getting the most investment by the club and often a great QB only comes to light after the starter got injured. Would we ever have heard of Brady if Bledsoe hadn't gotten injured? Probably not. Yes it's more likely that you will find a starter in the first 36 or so picks. But your choice of an artificial limit of after the 36th pick, but before the third round sets an artificial, and incorrect, perception that good QB's aren't taken after the 36th pick.
