Hey guys. Like Kurt, I've got a bet going with a friend to see who can get the most accurate mock draft between the two of us for the first round. I also threw in explanations for the players and for my first day Jets mock at the bottom. Please evaluate both and criticize all you want  EDIT: I changed around a few picks here due to feedback. 1 projected trade: Tampa Bay trades #4, #35, #64 and #214 (2625.8 pts.) to Detroit for #2 and #158 (2628.2 pts.) 1. Raiders: Jamarcus Russell QB LSU – It seems inevitable at this point that he signs with them in the next few days. Davis seems to love his raw potential. 2. Tampa (f/DET): Calvin Johnson WR Ga. Tech – TB is said to covet him and he’s the best overall prospect in the class and perhaps one of the best ever coming out at the position. He’s the overall package; speed, size, hands, and a great attitude. 3. Cleveland: Brady Quinn QB Notre Dame – Peterson would be the sexy pick here, but they need a franchise QB and they can get the guy who’s the #1 QB coming out (as far as current ability goes) in Quinn. 4. Detroit (f/TB): Gaines Adams DE/OLB Clemson – They get the guy they wanted all along who fills a big hole on the outside while gaining some picks back to get him where he’s more valuable. 5. Arizona: Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin - Again, fills a huge need and makes too much sense here. A better overall package that Brick but a bit less of a stoic pass protector at this point, Thomas is still the #1 tackle in the draft. 6. Washington: Alan Branch DT Michigan - I don’t buy Branch falling and this guy could be a huge force in the middle for them. 7. Minnesota: LaRon Landry S LSU - Addresses their terrible pass D. 8. Atlanta: Jamaal Anderson DE Arkansas - Makes too much sense with glass-for-muscles J Abe and Patrick Kerney leaving. 9. Miami: Levi Brown OT Penn St. – A huge need, good value, same at it’s been thus far in this draft. 10. Houston: Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma – Probably shouldn’t have fallen this far with his talent, but doesn’t match up well with any of the other top teams other than Cleveland and maybe Atlanta. Houston won’t make the same mistake again and will get a guy who will most likely be a better true running back in this league. 11. San Francisco: Patrick Willis ILB Ole Miss – San Fran’s made good strides but are still lacking some talent and Willis is basically J Vilma with prototypical size and is versatile enough to play any LB position for them. 12. Buffalo: Leon Hall CB Michigan – With Clements gone and Willis gone he pick before them, Buffalo fills what is a big need here with a guy who will likely be a decent #1 but not a true shutdown corner at the next level. 13. St. Louis: Amobi Okoye DT Louisville – At this point their whole D could use an upgrade and they have been said to love this guy. Will vastly help their pass rush overall. 14. Carolina: Greg Olsen TE Miami – With arguably the most talent on any team that didn’t make the playoffs, Carolina has no huge needs that present much of a value here, so they add another dimension to their offense with Olsen. 15. Pittsburgh: Darrelle Revis CB Pitt – With the probable turnover to the Cover-2, they grab the best corner available. 16. Green Bay: Reggie Nelson S Florida – A playmaker who was considered the #1 safety until Landry’s stellar combine. I’d pick Lynch here but apparently there are rumblings that they’re not enamored with him. 17. Jacksonville: Adam Carriker DE Nabraska – In need of a pass rusher and a safety, Nelson just came off the board and Carriker’s way too good a value here to pass up. 18. Cincinnati: Jon Beason LB Miami – A character guy and great athlete who fits since Odell Thurman and Brian Simmons are gone. 19. Tennessee: Ted Ginn Jr. WR OSU– A burner who will stretch the field so that Young will have room to air out his own legs. 20. NY Giants: Chris Houston CB Arkansas– After they had a terrible patchwork secondary here, they take the top corner who is the least sure thing, but has all the physical tools you look for in a shutdown corner. 21. Denver: Dwayne Jarrett WR USC– If their trade for CJ doesn't go through, this guy's basically CJ minus the tremendous speed. Huge with great hands, Jerrett will increase their Red Zone output to an almost exponential degree. 22. Dallas: Robert Meachem WR Tennessee– A guy true #1 potential who will add stability where there is uncertainty in TO and Terry Glenn's body. 23. Kansas City: Dwayne Bowe WR LSU– They’ve worked without a true #1 for years yet that time comes to an end here, where Bowe can be the whole package if he continues with what he had during his senior season. 24. New England: Paul Posluszny LB Penn St. – A high character guy who can come in to eventually replace their aging LB corps. 25. NY Jets: Justin Blalock G Texas – Explained below with the other Jets picks. 26. Philadelphia: Michael Griffin S Texas – Michael Lewis really blew last year and this guy can step right in and make an impact with his athleticism. 27. New Orleans: Justin Harrell DT Tennessee– For years they've wanted a difference maker up front and Harrell would've been top 15 had he not gotten hurt during the year. 28. New England: Brandon Meriweather S Miami – Versatile enough to play corner until Rodney Harrison gets kicked out of the league, this guy would be the #2 safety if it weren’t for that fight. 29. Baltimore: Anthony Spencer OLB/DE Perdue – Adalius Thomas is gone and this guy’s physical ability screams Adalius part II for whoever takes him, but is younger and would probably be cheaper. 30. San Diego: Anthony Gonzalez WR OSU – Their WR corps are below average so they get the next best guy in the draft class at the position. 31. Chicago: Ben Grubbs G Auburn – Grossman’s ass needs all the protection it can get and Grubbs is the most complete guard in the draft at this point. 32. Indianapolis: Lawrence Timmons LB Florida St.– A raw player who is already a very good football player and will replace Cato June to help their porus run defense. EDIT: This is what I project the Jets taking based on their draft trends towards smart, athletic players, not necessarily who I want: Jets Day 1 projection: 1. Justin Blalock G Texas – A dominating run blocker who has incredible strength and will open up holes for Jones and Washington. With some help on his technique, his pass blocking will improve as well. Has all the physical traits you look for in a guard, and all the intangibles you want from any player, period. 2a. Mike Walker WR UCF – By my estimates, Josh Wilson and Eric Wright are gone by here and I don’t like the rest of the CB’s of value here. Walker’s apparently shooting up draft boards and could even be gone by here. Has all the tools to be a #1 at the next level and replace Coles when he decides to hang them up in a few years (most likely). 2b. Zak DeOssie LB Brown – Will line up as an OLB in the 3-4. Has great football intelligence, prototypical size, and phenomenal speed for the position. I pick him more as a hunch since he has ties to Mangini and is basically in the mold of the type of player he seems to like. Maybe a bit of a reach but he will likely be gone by our third rounder. 3. Jonathan Wade CB Tennessee – An outstanding athlete who is a converted wide receiver, so he has very decent ball skills. Was a track star at Tennessee and has all the physical tools you look for at the next level. Most analyses of him state that good coaching is the only way this potential will be reached, and what better coach than the one who turned Troy Brown the WR into Troy Brown the CB in the playoffs a few years ago. Jets Day 1 preference: I have 2 mocks I'd like based on the draft goes as my mock says it will and they're both based on who we pick in the first. Look at the second rounders as being interchangeable because they're so close together: 1. Blalock G Texas- See above 2a. Josh Wilson CB Maryland or Daymeion Hughes CB Cal(Eric Wright's likely gone, and I'd want these guys in this order) - Wilson's a great athlete and individual who's the only one I see in the second other than Wright with true #1 potential. Hughes is a ballhawk who makes up for his lack of measurables with incredible instincts. 2b. Quentin Moses OLB Georgia, Brian Robison OLB Texas, or Ikaika Alama-Francis OLB Hawaii(in that order) - Quentin Moses could turn into J Abe minus the pussy, Robison's a great all around package, and Francis is raw but a physical freak. All have great intangibles as well. 3. Mike Walker WR UCF or Paul Soliai DT Utah - Walker's true #1 potential IMO and Soliai can turn into the fat ass we need in front of the ILBs, allowing D-Rob to moke into the DE rotation once he develops. Mock number 2: 1. Anthony Spencer OLB Perdue - If you're a Jets fan, the idea of this guy coming off the edge with Bryan Thomas is salivating, and could be one of the best rushing tandems in the league if he pans out. 2a. Josh Beekman G BC or Doug Free OT Norther Illinois - Bolster the line here with Clement or Moore's replacement. 2b. Mike Walker WR UCF - See above. Guarantees we get him because I really, really like him as a prospect and he is moving ons up boards. 3. Jonathan Wade CB Tennessee or Fred Bennett CB SC - See above. I think Mangini could have a field day with either of these guys.
Overall solid... I'm not sold on Zak DeOssie... I doubt that the Giants take Lynch even if he does fall there. I don't like Meachem falling past Bowe, Ginn AND Jarrett... Other than that, it looks good.
Your reaching with the first 3 picks, though I wouldent cry if we nab Blalock. Walker can be had with our 3rd rounder, not our 1st 2nd round pick. Likewise with DeOzzie. I wouldent mind the Wade pick however.
I agree, but this is just a "gut" feeling I have about who they're picking based on how they picked last year, putting an emphasis on athleticism and intelligence. I put my personal picks in the forst post after an edit. PA, I'll take into consideration your WR and Lynch comments and shift them around a bit.
DeOssie might be, but Walker most definately won't. He's rising and right now probably stands as a low 2nd/early 3rd rounder. I don't see what the problem is with taking a player before where he is "projected" to go, so long as you think he's gonna be player and don't think he'll be around by the time your next pick is.
I concur with JFiPA (as usual). I know a lot of people are peeing their pants for DeOssie and while he does have a really cool name -- and we should be making our draft boards based on how cool someone's name sounds -- I'm not convinced on him yet. I like us taking Anthony Spencer or Blalock or Houton in RD 1. I spoke with a co-worker today who thinks Blalock falls to us in RD 2 and that he's fairly unproven. I vehemently disagreed with him to no avail. I think the Titans are going to go for Ginny instead of Bowe. Imagine the torture they could force defenses to endure -- Ginn goes long... is open but the defense is so spread out that Vinny Young just takes a 40-yard stroll for the first down. Next play, same idea except he commits to Ginn and they get a TD.
A.) Like I said, it's more of a feeling I get that the Jets are targeting him. Mangini has a history with him going back to his days on the Pats and he fits the mold of the athletic, smart players who Tanny chose in E Smith, Schlegel, Leon, and B Smith. You also can't argue that they'll reach for their man if they deem it necessary. I'd much rather Quentin Moses, Brian Robison, or a few others in that spot. B.) Blalock unproven? He was highly touted coming into college and has only gotten better since. He's the reason why Young could run so much the past few years. Smack your friend on the side of the head for me, will ya  C.) I agree with you on Ginn and I almost see him and Jarrett being swappable at the picks I currently have them at. I'm going to change the pick because I just see Chow salivating over the possibilities there, but don't discount Chow's experience with Jarrett and ability to vouch for him as well.
I didnt like much after the Blalock pick.... Walker was a reach, wait until the 63 at the very earliest, but id hold off until the 3rd CB should be the 2nd pick off the board, and with that they should nab McCauley via trade up, sit back and pick up Eric Wright, or Josh Wilson OLB is not an absolute need...in the first day that is...sit back and let Antawn Barnes come to the jets...find a way to obtain a 4th rounder if need be...
