First time making a thread pls dnt destroy me people..

Anyway about the Muhammad Wilkerson situation. When do you guys think he will be granted a contract extension? Do you think its smart to use a team option on a player thats getting this good that fast? His value is pretty much only sure to increase next year which means he'll be worth more money and we all know how idzik is with the money. Will not paying wilk his well deserved contract extension leave a bitter taste in his mouth and make him test the market to get overpaid somewhere else? I jus dont think its a great idea to wait this thing out esp since were not making any big moves with this kinda cap space left. Last thing im thinking is may be idzik is waiting til mid season... Thoughts ??

I think once our roster is set Wilk will get his contract extension. My 2 cents on it is Idzi might be waiting for the cap to settle and once we know exactly where we stand
financially he will set up Wilks contract to suit our cap situation.

Helll yea ! Got a feeling watt is gonna get a record breaking contract at his position which means we will have to be somewhere around that ball park. But I've done some business with mo via twitter he seems like a really humble dude and this is his hometown so maybe we'll get a small discount

It's a good question, but I think that's part of the reason we've been so frugal in free agency. The CBA that was being disputed in the offseason he was drafted allows for a special one year option that the team can put into effect this offseason. It dictates that he will remain under contract for an additional year at basically the same price he is now, although I need to look up the exact amount. It basically means we don't have to extend him at his real value as a vet until the 2015 offseason, a time when we will have an even better idea of who makes up the true core of the team. A very big part of what dictates a players worth in a contract extension is actually what players on his team are paid, and if Idzik goes to him and says you'll be making more than any other player on the team at least on defense, it will be hard for Mo to say no to that. He clearly loves playing for Rex. By clearing our roster of big contracts, there will be no one who Wilk can point to and say I'm more valuable than this guy, I deserve more. Most players don't want to go to free agency, especially when they are happy with the team they are on and can get guaranteed money there. Also, JJ Watt will almost certainly have that same option exercised by the Texans, as he is also an elite player out of the 2011 draft. The good news is JJ Watt's monster 2012 season will be difficult to recreate, so it's hard to know exactly what the Texans will pay him.

He is very good and somehow him not being selected to Pro Bowl might work in our favor in terms of the money he will command. I hope he gets a fair extension sooner than later.

after the draft, and using a portion of it on some more late cut free agents, we will still have a good amount of cap space, might as well use it on Big Mo

It's not a smart move when we will have an additional year of his services at a drastically lower price.

But if he has an amazing JJ Watt type year? Then what? Ur gonna be paying a lot more than whatever was initially set. I think that rule is better for average players that came out of that draft but Watt & Mo can back fire big time by using that.

No offense, but extending a player a year before it's necessary just because he might increase his value to your team is a pretty bad strategy. If Mo has a 20 sack season in 2014, I will be ecstatic, and so will Idzik.

Even in our situation where we have the money to give him a big but potentially smaller contract then he may be getting next year if he does so happen to have that 20 sack season? Like you said wouldn't u rather sign him before jj gets his extension and boost our price up ? Im only saying this bc its idzik lol. We dont know how he treats his own guys yet in negotiations.

Needs to happen yesterday... The longer we wait, the more expensive he will be.. JJ Watt is going to get a mega contract and Wilk will want to be around that. We have the money to do it cuz we aint spending it on shit, so why not?

If Houston jumps the gun and gives him an extension this offseason, let them go right ahead but they are pretty tight on the cap as it is. I'd be surprised if they do though, and there's always the chance Wilk has a down or injured year and in that case you wasted a huge signing bonus, so it's a crapshoot. If Wilk proves he is worth more, he'll get more. Trying to predict the future generally bites you in the ass.

We have no idea what is going on. We could be talking and he could be balking or we could be close to a deal, who knows? The only thing you can be sure of is you won't hear a word about it until it's done.

Yes if we want, but considering our cap space I really doubt we will. The franchise tag is usually used on players when you can't come to an agreement with a player that won't jeopardize the team's cap, or you don't know whether you'll want him on the team for more than one more year. It greatly limits how you distribute money, so I doubt we will franchise him. We can if we need to though.

Idzik seems like a no BS type, he'll make an offer and either Mo takes it or we part ways. There may be some wiggle room, but I doubt we match what another team pays another player.
If they are words apart, we exercise our extra year option and try to trade him for DP's.
