Has anyone noticed there's been a barrage of retarded timeouts taken this weekend? Off the top of my head, there's (1) Fins calling a TO before a short, chip shot FG by Nugent...clearly not meant to ice him, and (2) some incidence in the Packers vs Chargers game. Now Titans call TO on 3 and 21, only to come out and fumble the ball out of FG range. Saints return the favor by calling a TO right before receiving a punt. /facepalm Well, whatever...just a weird observation. Onto the MNF game. Young is the man.
Sean Payton is a moron. Why would you go for it in your own zone on 4th and 1? On top of that, why would you throw on that down?
I agree. The TO the fins called could have cost them the game. Also, I think that the Broncos have started a terrible trend of icing the kicker .1 seconds before the ball is snapped.
Real questionable call there. If they were going to go for it at all, they should have sneaked it, then thrown long on the 1dt down.
Beginning with the 2005 season, head coaches were given the right to call TOs in such circumstances. Shanahan is not the first one to take advantage of the rule.
Thanks for the history lesson. I know the rule and I know when it was enacted. My complaint is that they are allowing the clock to tick much to close to the snap of the ball. Thus the ball is snapped and then kicked. It's extremely difficult for a successful snap, hold and kick twice in a row from the same placement.
It came across in your post that you were unaware of the rule because you said the Broncos started a terrible tread. If my response seemed a little snippy, it's just how I post. No ill shit was meant. Your complaint is with the rule then. Shanahan did nothing wrong. I stated here recently that I have seen these sorts of TOs called in 2005 and 2006. I just can't recall specific cases. I'd have to go back and look at gamebooks. Alas, I don't really have the time nor care to do so. I don't think we've seen this at end-of-game moments and maybe that's why this has become a controversy. If it happened earlier in those games (like I believe it happened in some '05 and '06 games), we wouldn't be discussing it.
Because statistically speaking teams that go for it on 4th and short are more likely to win. Don't you read TMQ?
Yes, I also like throwing for it on 4th-and-1. It's what the Redskins should have done yesterday. Their 1st and 4th down play calls were cuckoo at the end of the game.
You want to know why the Saints suck this year? Every frickin play is some trick misdirection sweep flea flicker. Yeah McAllister is out, but how about dropping back 3-5 steps throwing timing routes and running it up the gut. They have a good line and every play seems to completely negate them because Bush either bounces it outside or Brees is throwing from outside the pocket.
They are ignoring the run game, and Brees needs to learn that diving for the 1st down like that can get you hurt
Looks like the feel-good story of 2006 has derailed pretty quickly in 2007, especially since early reports are that Deuce has a torn ACL and is out for the season.
Bush needs to learn to play in a lower gear. It isn't hard to run him off the field the way he plays.
