Just saw the interview he did for the Jets Official site and he handled himself here like a real pro. MM got very excited about all FA acquisitions especially VIck, and CJ whom he described as"deadly and can score from anywhere on the field". He played up everyone on Roster: Cumberland, Simms, Ford especially noting how fast the team will be with our additions. When asked about Draft said he "would rather not talk about it and he trusts personnel department" Basically, it sounds like he has "I work with whatever I am given/progressively develop players philosophy". If he knows anything about player evaluations he certainly is not telling us here. He sticks up for the players which is what a good coach should do and avoided any controversy. Looks like Jets are turning into an oversized College program, recruiting players from draft and free agency till we are ready to win a SB. I guess if it can work in Seattle it can work here. Any thoughts?
I like listening to Mornhinweg's interviews, he's a very straightforward guy. It's always very easy to read between the lines of what he's saying. This one was no exception, but he didn't say anything I didn't expect.
He also said something about drafting "the BPA" ....so this means what? We will not trade down ,only up for someone who is a must have !? Or he is Jets smokescreen, that we will do nothing at 18,basically taking any good player because he is happy to work with the players/FA on offense we got now.
It's all part of the overall value system. You assign a value to a certain player, probably in a numerical fashion. You also assign numerical value to picks. If for whatever reason the highest value of any remaining player is lower than the value you get from the picks a team is offering to trade into your spot, you pull the trigger and trade down and get the maximum value possible. If there is a player remaining say 5 picks ahead of you, and you have a very high value assigned to that player, it is possible that the draft picks you'd need to give up to trade up and draft that player have a lesser value, in which case you trade up and thus again get maximum value according to your board. Some teams factor in need to the value equation very strongly, especially teams who are playoff contenders who are built without depth and thus have a significant roster hole at 1 position. A team who regards BPA as highly as the Jets do right now make the quality of the talent a much more significant part of the value equation. I'm not saying it's this simple but a sort of way to represent this is like this: Some teams: Needx3 + talent = value Some teams: Need + talentx3 = value Right now the Jets are operating under the second scenario. And let me say it is not one or the other, every team factors their value equation in a slightly different way.
So 5 picks ahead of Jets is pick 13 maybe that's the Giants (dunno) you draft up getting your high value guy(s) and then presumingly giving them greater quantity of selection but in your mind lower values overall. Let's say 2 or 3 picks from rounds 2 and below. The Jets are still left with about 9 or 10 picks. But if there is no value for you at 18 (is that really likely?), you trade down and get more picks to use later, I guess , on value players that have fallen or just happen to be at say pick 58? I hope I am getting better at this lol.
You have the idea, but the examples I gave had no relation to this years draft, it was just for the sake of argument. Every draft is different, so this year you might put a higher value on an early second round pick than you would in previous drafts for example. In this draft, it is possible that a player like HCD represent a very high value to the Jets, and if he is not picked by the 14th pick, perhaps he represents more value than the picks it could cost us to move up 4 spots. How likely is that? I don't know, probably not very. I think the teams that factor in need at a higher percent of the equation tend to value particular players that fit that need pretty highly, for example if the Packers feel they are an ILB away from competing for a division title/Super Bowl, and they feel that anyone after Mosley represents a major drop off in talent, that might make a guy like Mosley exceptionally valuable to them, perhaps to the point of being more valuable than the picks required to trade up and secure him. I think a team like the Jets who value general talent higher are less likely to come across a situation where they have a player valued so much more highly than others.
